The eastbound California Zephyr works its way down in elevation toward Little Ten Curve on the approach to Rocky. The east end of the siding of Clay can be seen in the foreground, now more than a mile behind the Zephyr (by rail).

Have you ever seen the California Zephyr running in what appears to be a distributed power formation with one P42 on the point and a second on the end? Turns out, in this case, the Zephyr is being taken back to Denver. A major rock slide required it be pulled back to town. The P42 on the left side of the shot is providing HEP and the P42 on the right is pulling the train eastbound around Big Ten Curve.

Mother nature decided to mess with the citizens of the Front Range by letting a couple inches of snow fall overnight, halfway through May! UP 1989 has earned the nickname the "Vampire Unit" as it typically runs between Denver and Pueblo overnight. However, the Vampire Unit is out playing in the snow on this morning, making a trip on the Moffat to rescue an MRONY stalled out at Tabernash.

Leave it to Colorado to always keep you on your toes when it comes to the weather! Less than three weeks away from JUNE and there is more than an inch of snow on the ground! UP 1989 and UP 5894 charge west through the white stuff at Leyden on their way to Tabernash. There, they will rescue a train that has stalled out and can't make it east over the divide.

The night prior to this shot, the MRONY stalled out on the climb between Tabernash and Winter Park. The rails were slick with snow and the two units on the train couldn't quite get the 4,100-ton train up the 2% grade. So, the train backed into Tabernash and this light power (which includes UP 1989) was sent west out of Denver to rescue the stalled train!

UP has been running a DPU on its daily freight (MNYRO), but this is the first time I've seen this. UP placed a trio of swing helpers halfway through the train. Here, they are pushing as they come out of Leyden.

UP's daily MNYRO had been sitting in the siding at Leyden for over 12 hours waiting for mud slides and a derailment to get cleaned up further west. You can just barely see the first of three swing helpers back in the middle of the train.

These SD40T-2s were being used on locals in California until they were retired by UP. They are headed to Denver where they will be auctioned off in July. UP 2888 was born as DRGW 5357. You can tell it is a former Grande T-2 here by the shortened fuel tank. By comparison, see UP 2904 which was born as SP 8357.

April in Colorado often means snow! April 23rd, 2010 was no exception. An eastbound MRONY has left the mountains behind (note Coal Creek Canyon in the distance) and is headed for Denver.

A site that is becoming more and more rare with every passing day. A pair of tunnel motors on the Moffat! Now granted, both tunnel motors are dead here as they are being transported to Denver. They have been retired and will be auctioned off in July.

In between Leyden and Rocky, a very tardy MRONY heads toward town. The train got held at Crescent for nearly 12 hours due to mud slides and a derailment in the Tunnel District between Plain and Crescent. In this shot, the crew on the train has about an hour left to work.

Just west of Leyden, the snow is really coming down in a typical Colorado Spring Blizzard. By the time the Zephyr would reach Crescent, there would hardly be a cloud left in the sky and the snow would rapidly be melting.

The westbound MNYRO heads into the siding at Leyden on a snowy April morning. Three inches of the white stuff fell overnight. The manifest is clearing the main to let the Zephyr run around on its journey west.

It's twenty minutes past sunset and overcast as BNSF's Denver to Provo trackage rights train heads west out of town. Considering I didn't have a tripod with me, I was pretty pleased with the way this extreme low light shot turned out! What do you think?

Just west of Leyden, a westbound light power move is on the roll. These moves are fairly common on the Moffat, typically running a couple times each week. Nine of the twelve units here will be dropped off in Glenwood Springs to be used as mid-train swing helpers on eastbound coal loads coming from the North Fork Branch. The remaining three units will continue on to Grand Junction.
