On a rather brisk morning (about 25°F), an eastbound coal load glides east past the intermediate signal at MP 14.5. The train has a clear signal and will proceed to Bypass Track 2 in Denver. Ultimately, the train is headed for the Cherokee power plant in northeast Denver. Which, by the end of 2017, will burn natural gas exclusively.

This is pretty much the definition of a perfect morning in Colorado (at least in my book)! Clear blue skies and temperatures right around 60ºF. A very long MRONY has an approach diverging (yellow-over-yellow) signal at Chemical. The train will be taking the siding at Leyden to meet its counterpart. These manifests used to be a good source for DC power (SD70Ms, SD60Ms, C44-9Ws, etc), but these days, they seem to almost always just carry the same AC power that coal trains have.

The Zephyr heads west through a cloud of snow about 14 miles west of Denver. Quite a different scene from 48 hours earlier, at this same location, when the sun was shining and the ground was dry.

Despite the fantastic sunshine right now, those dark looking clouds indicate the future of the weather in the metro area! The first snow fall of the 2010-2011 winter season in Denver would come later in the afternoon. The westbound Zephyr will get to the snow a lot sooner though as it journeys west.

Just west of Leyden, the snow is really coming down in a typical Colorado Spring Blizzard. By the time the Zephyr would reach Crescent, there would hardly be a cloud left in the sky and the snow would rapidly be melting.
