A pair of Warbonnets, both sporting a couple of orange components (unfortunately), leads a southbound baretable just south of Broomfield. The train is about to pass underneath US-36 near Church Ranch Lake.

BNSF's daily Laurel, MT to Denver, CO manifest wraps around the curve leading under the bridge of US-36, which I was standing on for the shot. This is almost the exact spot where two Burlington Northern trains hit head-on in a collision in 1985.

Had this Valmont coal train been headed south, the lighting would have been far better! Here is a look at the two Warbonnets leading up the northbound coal load, currently stopped to wait for a southbound currently in Boulder.

Temperatures on this day had warmed up to close to 30 degrees...a downright heat wave from the 5 degree high the day before! The crew on this stopped Valmont coal load seem to be taking advantage of the "nice" weather by opening the nose door on the lead unit.

A Valmont coal load hold near MP 12 (and Church Ranch Lake) on the Front Range Sub. The train will be meeting a southbound at Broomfield and the crew is holding here so as not to block Nickel Street.

Talk about something you don't everyday! DC power running on a coal load...not only DC power, but some very nicely painted DC power at that. The coal load is headed for the Valmont power plant in Boulder.

A northbound BNSF manifest sits on the main track near MP 12 on the Front Range Sub in the rapidly-fading light at the end of the day. A flock of birds makes its way west toward Church Range Lake.

About a mile and a half south of Broomfield, BNSF's Brownville, TX to Laurel, MT manifest is stopped on the main track and waiting. They are going to meet a southbound at Broomfield which is still nearly two hours away! So, to avoid blocking any crossing, the crew sits and patiently waits. This is a good place to stop as it is close to a new Super Target! Crew can go an get some shopping out of the way while waiting.

The HPASSAG has become a very common train on the Front Range Sub, showing up just about daily in addition to the HLAUDEN and HDENLAU. BNSF 844 is one of the few C40-8Ws to wear the New Image scheme as of this date. The train is about to pass underneath US-36 just south of the siding of Broomfield.

A sign of the conditions of the day, snow blows off the ballast and the cars as this northbound HDENLAU-07 moves quickly north near Lower Church Lake. The train was moving at 48 MPH on the approach to Broomfield.

It can be very difficult to shoot northbound on the Front Range Sub, particularly between the months of September and March. Regardless, here FURX 7223 (ex-BNSF) leads the HDENLAU north at MP 12. Note the third unit, a Montana Rail Link F45XR #392!

This was the location where, on August 2, 1985, two Burlington Northern freights collided head on. Extra 6311 west (north) and Extra 6575 east (south) struck each other directly underneath the US-36 overpass shown in this image. The crewman on Extra 6311 read the incorrect train orders and the train departed Clear Creek before Extra 6575 had arrived. The resulting explosion melted the bridge! Today, the QDENTAC-09 is stopped, waiting for the MLAUDEN to arrive at Broomfield for a meet.

This train is slowly crawling past this lake located near US-36. I tried to cut as much of the development out of the shot as possible. This location is not nearly as rural as it was twenty years ago.
