Yard Shots CSX
On a very wet, rainy afternoon in September, I came across an unexpected visitor at BNSF's 38th street engine house. A CSX ES44DC wearing the "Dark Future" scheme was getting soaked in the down pour.

The southbound MNPNY (North Platte to North Yard) manifest has almost reached the end of its trip. The train take a diverging approach signal at Broadway (CP DS900) at the west end of the Belt Industrial Lead. The train is about a half mile away from the yard limits of North Yard.

Heavy rains in the Denver area in the last two days have resulted in quite a few pools of water forming, particularly around the tracks. Here, the MLMDVX (Limon to Denver extra) has just passed Quebec street on the Limon Sub heading west toward Denver. 36th street would have the train hold at Steele Street until a place could be cleared for the train.

A badly faded B40-8W warbonnet and MRL SD40 lead the northbound QDENTAC-09 through Westminster. The doublestack is about to pass underneath 92nd Avenue. Looks like the crew wanted to get some fresh air in the cab!

This train is slowly crawling past this lake located near US-36. I tried to cut as much of the development out of the shot as possible. This location is not nearly as rural as it was twenty years ago.

This was the location where, on August 2, 1985, two Burlington Northern freights collided head on. Extra 6311 west (north) and Extra 6575 east (south) struck each other directly underneath the US-36 overpass shown in this image. The crewman on Extra 6311 read the incorrect train orders and the train departed Clear Creek before Extra 6575 had arrived. The resulting explosion melted the bridge! Today, the QDENTAC-09 is stopped, waiting for the MLAUDEN to arrive at Broomfield for a meet.

Amazing what a few months can do! Less than two years ago, the road in the foreground and the apartments in the background hadn't even been thought up yet! Today, it is becoming increasingly difficult to get good shots of this wonderful S-Curve.

This wide angle shot shows the newly built road connecting Broomfield with the Northwest Parkway. In addition, these new apartments are quickly being built next ot the tracks. No doubt the future home of people complaining about the noisy trains running next to their house. Imagine what this will look like in twenty years when commuter rail runs through this location!

Although somewhat cast in shadow, I enjoy this view of two different trains meeting each other at the siding at Broomfield. The siding and the main follow completely different terrains that differ in altitude by as much as twenty feet as you can see in this picture. The QDENTAC moves north through the siding above while the MLAUDEN moves south on the main below.
