UP has been running a DPU on its daily freight (MNYRO), but this is the first time I've seen this. UP placed a trio of swing helpers halfway through the train. Here, they are pushing as they come out of Leyden.

UP's daily MNYRO had been sitting in the siding at Leyden for over 12 hours waiting for mud slides and a derailment to get cleaned up further west. You can just barely see the first of three swing helpers back in the middle of the train.

April in Colorado often means snow! April 23rd, 2010 was no exception. An eastbound MRONY has left the mountains behind (note Coal Creek Canyon in the distance) and is headed for Denver.

A site that is becoming more and more rare with every passing day. A pair of tunnel motors on the Moffat! Now granted, both tunnel motors are dead here as they are being transported to Denver. They have been retired and will be auctioned off in July.

Just west of Leyden, the snow is really coming down in a typical Colorado Spring Blizzard. By the time the Zephyr would reach Crescent, there would hardly be a cloud left in the sky and the snow would rapidly be melting.

Just west of Leyden, a westbound light power move is on the roll. These moves are fairly common on the Moffat, typically running a couple times each week. Nine of the twelve units here will be dropped off in Glenwood Springs to be used as mid-train swing helpers on eastbound coal loads coming from the North Fork Branch. The remaining three units will continue on to Grand Junction.

After meeting Amtrak at Clay, this empty rail train has clear signals the rest of the way into Denver. Once there, a new crew will get on the train and take it to Pueblo, where more rail can be loaded on to it.

Feeling chilly yet? Behind the clouds, the sun has actually set behind the Colorado Rockies as this eastbound coal load heads east toward Leyden with a clear signal in to town.

BNSF manifests on the Moffat pretty consistently depart Denver in the afternoon these days, usually getting out of town between 2pm and 4pm. This day is no exception. The Denver-Provo manifest is just west of Leyden shortly after 4pm.

Whew! Got sticky brakes!? A bit of smoke is being produced by a stuck brake on the Rocky Local as it moves down the mainline just west of Leyden. The local will take the siding at Leyden to wait on two westbounds that have yet to come out of Denver.

When UP first brought back a daily manifest to the Moffat in May 2005, it was quite common to find SD70Ms powering the train. More recently, it seems that AC4400CWs - which are typically found in coal service - are also the main power on the North Yard / Roper trains. Case-in-point is this MRONY, with a trio of AC4400CWs.

Just after 6 o'clock in the morning and UP 1989 leads the MRONY-13 down the Moffat. The sun was actually up at this point, but obscured by some gosh darn morning clouds in the eastern sky. Ugh.

Almost a mile west of Leyden, along CO-72, six units are leading up the MNYRO on its journey west. The Rio Grande Heritage Unit just got a wash two days earlier, so it definitely stands out!

Not only was this my final shot of the Ski Train for the 2008-2009 Winter Season, but as it turns out, this was my last shot of the Ansco Ski Train ever! The trip the next day would prove to be the last ever for the Ski Train under Phil Anschutz.

A look up at the DPU on an eastbound coal load as seen from knee-deep in a snow drift! Nice to see the American flag on this unit is relatively clean.
