This was a bit of a surprise! Southern Pacific originally had 279 AC4400CWs on the roster, numbered 100 to 378. As of this picture, there were only 13 of those 279 left and unpatched on UP's roster. Not only was SP 343 in Colorado on this day, but it was leading the MSIDV-26.

A few miles west of UP's 36th Street Yard, a "rocket train" passes by one of the smaller yards used on the Limon Sub to spot cars set for industries. The rocket train has a fresh crew and is headed for the Greeley Sub, the Overland Route, and eventually, Clearfield, UT.

I just happened to come across this customer special (symboled SKSSCW-11) just east of Denver on the Limon Subdivision. The train is carrying a component for an oil refinery. The component came from Houston, TX and is headed for Salt Lake City, UT.

A few miles away from UP's 36th Street Yard, Union Pacific's EC-4 track geometry car heads west. The geometry car spends its time traveling all over UP's system.

After completing its switching work at Roydale, the LDJ03 is headed back toward 36th Street. The train is moving at restricted speed as it is following a coal empty into the yard using a box 4 and a box 11 on its track warrant. The local is passing the switching yard at Monaco Street. GMTX 2678 is a leaser of Baltimore & Ohio heritage.

Afternoons in Colorado is often the time when severe weather moves into the state. This was the first time I'd taken any shots when it was hailing! This is the Roydale local heading back toward 36th Street with over 100 cars ready to be broken down and rebuilt into trains.

Because the rail grinder move at a relatively low speed, it often doesn't make it very far in between trains. In this case, the grinder made it about 2 1/2 miles before it had to clear for a coal load. The train is moving toward the camera in this image. The water being sprayed will help soak things to reduce the risk of a fire. Note the smoke coming further back, a result of the actual grinding.
