This grain train proceeds east on the main at Mesa after departing Sable with a fresh crew. The train is actually a reroute that is running through Colorado due to a derailment in Emmett, KS. The train originated in Milford, UT and is headed for Salina, KS.

Labor Day finds this westbound coal empty sitting in the siding at Mesa. A zone crew has just untied the train and is preparing to take it in to North Yard for a power swap. Currently, the train is being led by an ES44AC, which is somewhat unusual for UP coal trains in Colorado.

Before continuing to the yard, however, the train must first wait for two eastbounds to come by before departing.

With light almost gone in the western sky, this unit pipe train is entering the siding at Mesa to clear up for an eastbound coal load. Even though the Limon Sub operates under track warrants, there is an ABS island at both ends of Mesa, allowing the dispatcher to throw the switch, saving the crew quite a bit of time.

Can you say blowing snow / white out conditions? A westbound coal empty approaches the west switch of Mesa on UP's Limon Subdivision in Aurora. Temperatures fell nearly 50 degrees overnight and this March blizzard settled into the area.

A westbound coal empty, led by 6661, holds the siding at Mesa as the end helpers from a coal load on the main pass by, moving at track speed. The UP 7655 is an ES44AC, delivered to UP at the beginning of June, 2007.

The conductor from a westbound coal empty in the siding at Mesa gives a wave to an eastbound coal load moving at track speed on the mainline. The conductor will give the train a "roll-by", making sure there are no defects with any of the cars.

Some of the newest power to come out of Erie, PA has been slow to show up on coal power in Colorado. However, two days after Thanksgiving found this four month old ES44AC on a westbound coal empty, holding the siding at Mesa for a meet with an eastbound.

As the sun moves further west in the afternoon sky, the snow-covered Rockies make a nice backdrop to the Rio Grande Jordan Spreader AX-41 which is headed east on the main at Mesa.

UP 900082 leads the WDEDEF-31 east on the main track at Mesa. The Cheyenne-based rotary plow is headed east on the Limon Sub to help clear the track. Lots of blowing snow after the last two blizzard have buried some of the line in snow drifts!
