In Colorado, coal loadings are down nearly 85% compared to where they were ten years ago! For quite some time now, Energy Mine has only been loading trains for customers within Colorado. Looks like there may be a new customer though with this train. The train originated from Curtis Bay, MD! Not sure if it is a one time thing, or if Energy has found a tiny bit of new life. While most shots come from the south side of the rails, we are looking down on this eastbound from the north side of the rails just at the mouth of the east end of the canyon. You can see US-40 on the opposite side of the Colorado River. A few hundred feet more and the train will knock down the clear signal at the west switch of Sulphur. The empty took the siding a few minutes ahead of us. As seen here, we shot past lead unit just before entering Byers Canyon.
