An ET44AH leads a westbound empty west of Leyden. The snow has been coming down since 11pm and it is only 20°F outside! The train is headed for the West Elk mine on the North Fork Branch.

Two westbound coal empties within 20 minutes of each other on the Moffat! Is this 2018 or 2008!? It just so happened that two empties got recrewed at nearly the same time on Bypass 1 and 2 in Denver. The first train to depart was headed for the North Fork Branch. This empty is headed for the Craig Branch.

As is typical, a pair of P42DCs lead the westbound Zephyr west of Leyden. More often than not, it also seems that the P42s are elephant style on the Zephyr. That's not always the case, but that's the way Amtrak tends to have them setup.

Running 4 1/2 hours late, the Zephyr hustles west out of Leyden in an effort to make up some time. The delay was mainly incurred between Lincoln, NE and Hastings, NE.

It's a chilly morning out (about 20°F) as BNSF's Denver-Provo manifest dashes west through some freshly fallen snow west of Leyden. The train should have a straight shot through to Grand Junction with minimal delays as there isn't much rolling on the Moffat on this first day of winter.

The sun is trying to break through the clouds as a westbound Denver-Provo manifest kicks up snow along the right of way just west of Leyden.

The westbound Zephyr is running about 90 minutes late as it heads west out of Leyden. The train left Denver Union Station on time, but had two delays in the first seven miles of its trip west, neither being Amtrak's fault. The first problem was a Union Pacific freight train stuck in emergency at Utah Junction (on the diamond leading to the Belt). Took an hour for that train to get out of Amtrak's way. The second delay came in Arvada when the crew on the train contacted the dispatcher and requested police! Turns out there was a domestic dispute between a man and a woman and the woman needed to be removed from the train and taken in to custody.

Just west of Leyden, the Zephyr is moving at track speed through falling snow. About two inches of the white stuff fell overnight, and is continuing to fall off and on throughout the morning.

The first day of winter brought with it the most measurable snow the Denver-Metro has had since last winter! The westbound Zephyr is running about 90 minutes late due to a couple of issues getting out of town.

A lone DPU on the tail end of an eastbound BNSF manifest helps to slow the train with its dynamic brakes as the train enters the siding Leyden. This is a telephoto shot from CO-72 looking south at the train, hence the backlighting.

The Zephyr is running about four hours late on this December morning. No complaints here from a chasing standpoint as the lighting is much more favorable at noon!

It isn't too common to find a westbound UP manifest on the Moffat in the mornings these days. The MNYRO is around 2pm or 3pm and, during winter, typically does not depart Denver until after dark. So what is this guy? This is the "Phippsburg Local". The symbol is the MNYPHX and it is headed for the Craig Branch.

This eastbound BNSF manifest departed Provo the day before and has traversed the former Rio Grande along with a UP manifest that is arriving at North Yard right around the time this shot was taken. Hard to tell if the BNSF train was behind the UP train for the entire trip. One or both may have stopped to switch in Grand Junction. The MRONY also had to wait for a recrew at Bond.

The California Zephyr (Number 5) had two private cars hanging out on the back of it as it headed west out of Denver. The first car is an ex-CB&Q Zephyr Dome Chair Car, now labeled for Northern Pacific. The second is labeled for the Louisville & Nashville.
