Finally! A real blizzard hit the Denver Metro area...just in time for the westbound Winter Park Express. Here, AMTK 156 (the Phase 1 "Bloody Nose" Heritage Unit) charges through the snow on the approach to Kipling Street.

I'm going to guess that passenger on board the Winter Park Express are very happy to be there. Warm, dry, and not behind the wheel, on the way to slopes. The train is approaching a clear intermediate at Kipling Street.

Amtrak's "Pointless Arrow"...the first scheme that Amtrak ever had...looks pretty good as it dashes through the snow on the point of the Winter Park Express.

Brrr! The Winter Park Express "Ski Train" is moving at track speed as it disappears in to morning blowing snow on its way to Winter Park. The train is crossing the grade crossing at Kipling Street.

Running about 30 minutes behind the Winter Park Express, a westbound coal empty that is headed for the West Elk Mine makes its way west out of Leyden on a very snowy January morning.

An ET44AH leads a westbound empty west of Leyden. The snow has been coming down since 11pm and it is only 20°F outside! The train is headed for the West Elk mine on the North Fork Branch.

A single SD70ACe bring up the tail end of a westbound coal empty as the train slowly disappears in to the morning blizzard. You can barely even see the intermediate signal at MP 14.5, only a quarter of mile away.

A great January blizzard blows through the Front Range of the Rockies as the California Zephyr, running right on time, approaches the grade crossing at Blue Mountain. It's a good day to be riding, checking out the winter landscape from the warmth of the Lounge car!

After the Zephyr ran around the train at Rocky, a westbound coal empty is coming up to the grade crossing at Blue Mountain Road. The train will take the siding at Plain to meet an eastbound coal load that is currently meeting the Zephyr at Crescent.

This eastbound coal load met a westbound at Plain and is now making its way through the S-Curves at Coal Creek and Blue Mountain. The train in the siding at Plain will end up being stuck there for about 90 minutes as the snow has jammed up the west switch and the dispatcher cannot get it to throw.

January 21, 2018 marked the first real, substantial snow that the Denver Metro area (and the Front Range of the Rockies) have seen in the 2017-2018 winter season. A great morning to catch a few trains playing in the snow on the Moffat! This eastbound loaded at Energy Mine and will soon be headed east on the Colorado plains.

This coal load is passing by the Chem Spur switch as it slowly rolls east toward Leyden. The train will continue down to Bypass 2, where the mid-train swing helpers will be cut out and the train will continue out on to the Limon Sub.

Most eastbound coal trains on the Moffat have three mid-train swing helpers. I have seen a few instances of four mid-train swings...but I think this may be the first time I've caught five mid-train swing helpers! The quintet will be set out in Denver, and the train will head for the plains with a standard 2x(0)x1 consist.

Always love catching EMD power on the Moffat. It may only be a single unit, but this SD70ACe looks good in the snow on the tail end of this eastbound coal load.
