BNSF's Longmont Switch (posing as the Buck Local) runs from the main track in Broomfield up the spur branch to Lafayette. Typically, this local runs at night. However, due to maintenance on the north end of the main track, the local ran in daylight on this Thursday afternoon! Here, the local is back across US-287 while traffic patiently waits.

Near the north end of the Lafayette Industrial Lead, the BNSF tracks cross over Coal Creek. Yup, the same Coal Creek found near Blue Mountain along the Moffat! Here, the Buck Local pull forward across the wooden trestle, getting ready to head back to the main line.

After picking up five bulkhead flats from the Lafayette Lumber Company, the Longmont Switch is headed back down the branch line to the main line in Broomfield. The train is about to pass the new Exempla Good Samaritan Medical Center just off to the left in this shot. The Northwest Parkway can be seen in the foreground.

With most of its journey on the Lafayette Industrial Lead completed, the Longmont Switch (which is pretending to be the Buck Local here) is almost back to Burns Junction. Once there, the crew will drop off the five bulkhead flats and leave them for the Longmont Turn to pick up later that afternoon.

This is not an uncommon view to find here on my website...with one notable exception! Typically there isn't a train actually on the Lafayette Industrial Lead. Burns Junction is the location where the C&S main and the CB&Q main diverged and took their own routes to Longmont. Today, the old CB&Q main on the right only runs as far as Lafayette and only serves a few industries along the line.

The Longmont Switch, after carrying out the duties normally handled by the Buck Local, just completed a rare daylight move up to Lafayette. The Longmont Switch has dropped off its cars and is now returning as light power north back toward Boulder. There, it will switch a recycling plant before returning north to Longmont.

A nice surprise for a May afternoon! A rail train came north on the Front Range Sub to drop off some welded rail along the tracks near milepost 17. A blue and yellow GP30 was on the point of the northbound, seen here coming through Broomfield on the main track.

This rail train is sporting some nice power as the train holds just short of Nickel Street in Broomfield. The train would have to hold at Broomfield for about two hours to wait for a southbound to come to Broomfield. Once in the clear, the rail train will drop new welded rail along the tracks at milepost 17, about two miles (rail) north of Broomfield.
