Moffat Tunnel (UP) Ski Train
An afternoon storm has moved into Winter Park as the Ski Train stops to pick up its passengers. The train is just long enough that the last few cars hold in the OS section at the east end of Winter Park.

Overcast skies just seemed to demand that this picture appear in black and white! Nobody is aboard the Kansas on this particular day as it sits near the (classic DRGW) signal at the east end of Winter Park.

Moffat Tunnel (UP) Ski Train
An artistic moment struck me when returning to Denver on the Ski Train. The ground is wet after recent rains which have now moved over Denver in the distance. Meanwhile, the Ski Train races down the main at Clay toward Big Ten Loop, the siding streaking by in the foreground.

Once returning to Denver, the Ski Train has to borrow some trackage in BNSF's 31st Street Yard is order to back in Union Station. The train is on the main here, passing the coal train (Coal One and Coal Two), both of which are currently occupied.

When the Ski Train returned to Denver and was being wyed in BNSF's yard, I was surprised to find a pair of UP AC6044CW's sitting near the house. It turns out that these units were most recently used on the Valmont coal train. UP runs the train from the mines to Denver; BNSF runs the train from Denver to the power plant in Boulder. UP keeps two units on the train for the duration.

As the Ski Train backs into Union Station, the tail end of a BNSF business train sits on Track Three. The train arrived around mid-day (while the Ski Train was up in Fraser) for the Democratic National Convention. A UP bus is also visible in the distance on the right side of the picture.

Denver Union Terminal (RTD) Amtrak, Ski Train, BNSF, Union Pacific
It has been many many years since Union Station has been this full! And it will probably be many years before it is again. Several railroads (including Union Pacific, BNSF, Norfolk Southern, the Ski Train and Amtrak) have trains in town for the Democratic National Convention. UP is on tracks four and five, BNSF and NS are on track three, the Ski Train is on track two and Amtrak is on track one.

For the week of the Democratic National Convention, UP 1989 (the Rio Grande Heritage Unit) is on public display just south of 16th Street. While the public cannot climb on the engine, there is a staircase allowing the public to look in the conductors side cab window.

An interesting comparison between the front of the latest engine from EMD and the latest engine from RailPower. UP 1989 is an SD70ACe just over two years old now. UPY 2622 is a low emission "Genset" unit produced by RailPower, Inc.

RailPower Inc is a relatively new company that produces very low emission engines. UPY 2622 is designated as an RP20GE. The unit is build on the frame of an [EMD] GP9. It uses electrical components from General Electric, and uses three 500 kW (low emission) diesel engines. The unit is capable of producing the equivalent of 2000 HP. As of this shot, UP currently has 98 units on their roster, most of which are in California and Texas.

Who new that Union Pacific owned as many buses as they do! I started to realize this fact the week of the Democratic National Convention. They had buses all over the Union Station area, including this one. The Rocky Mountains with the Denver Skyline and a train in the foreground. Not only do they own the bus, but it looks like it was painted just for the convention!
