It's actually been several months since I went down to the yards, but it seems I picked the right Sunday to do so! Check out this string of classic EMD power sitting near the house.

I certainly prefer "action" shots to "roster" shots, but I think it's also good to get some roster shots of the current power roaming the rails!

Some of BNSF SD70MACs will be coming up on 20 years of service soon. These work horses have spent the majority of their tenure in coal service and seem to have worked really well.

I have been reading that BNSF has been getting rid of their GP30s (or, former/rebuilt GP30s, as the case may be). However, this former GP30 is looking pretty sharp in the New Image scheme. It is a GP30 in appearance only. It has in fact been rebuilt into a GP39-2M.

A rebuilt GP39-2M (which looks like a GP30) is paired up with a GP39-2 to work on some switching in the yard.

BNSF 2745 was once a GP30 but it has since been rebuilt. Note the fact that the middle radiator fan is missing. It is now a GP39-2R. And, it is paired up with a GP28M.

Definitely a good morning for interesting power in the BNSF yard in Denver! Internally, this is now an SD40-2...however, externally, it still looks exactly like the SD45-2 that it was built as over thirty years ago.

A very colorful consist leads up BNSF's daily Kansas City to Denver manifest. Among the three BNSF C44-9Ws is a CSX AC4400CW and a Hollis & Eastern GP10!

I went ahead and grabbed a roster shot of this AC4400CW, if for no other reason then because I have very few pictures of CSX units on my site! After all, Colorado isn't exactly CSX country...

Here was a very lucky catch of a unit that just happened to be passing through town! This is a GP10 of Illinois Central vintage. More recently, this little unit has served as one of two units on the Hollis Eastern. A railroad in southwestern Oklahoma that has about 13 miles of track total. I don't know why 50% of their motive power was in Denver on this day.

The last weekend in September and/or the first weekend in October is usually the best weekend to experience fall colors in the Colorado High Country. October 2nd was no exception! An eastbound coal load departs East Portal with a scattered blanket of changing aspens covering the mountain behind.

If this was any day but Sunday, we'd probably be seeing the MNYRO here. However, the Roper manifest gets a break on Sunday's. Instead, this is the MNYGJ making a run to Grand Junction.

Something is peeking! An eastbound coal load comes around the corner toward Rollins as there is a smattering of fall colors in the surrounding area.

An eastbound coal load heads eastbound down the main at Rollins. Several trees have lost their leaves in the distance, indicating this weekend may well be the best for falls colors. Next weekend, far more trees may be leafless!
