You may not know it just from this picture, but this is a rather special GP40-2 on UP's roster. You may have guessed at this point that this is a former Rio Grande GP40-2...and you'd be correct. However, this was the first Rio Grande unit to be assimilated in to (and painted in) Union Pacific yellow. In mid-1997, DRGW 3122 had the "honor" of receiving the first repaint on Rio Grande's roster. The unit has somehow managed to keep it's original UP number (5245) and has also managed to stay in Colorado working on locals for the past 15 years, working out of Colorado Springs, North Yard (in Denver) and Grand Junction.

You can see numerous skiers still hitting the slopes of Winter Park in the background as the tail end DPU on this MNYRO emerges from the Moffat Tunnel and passes the repeater signal at MP 56.5. This signal displays the same aspect as the east switch of Winter Park, which can be see in the distance toward the right side of the photo. The signal allows westbound trains to know what to expect at the east switch of Winter Park. If this repeater is red, trains may pass the signal, prepared to stop at east Winter Park.

How about a different perspective for Byers Canyon? While most shots come from the south side of the rails, we are looking down on this eastbound from the north side of the rails just at the mouth of the east end of the canyon. You can see US-40 on the opposite side of the Colorado River. A few hundred feet more and the train will knock down the clear signal at the west switch of Sulphur.
