Freight trains can speed up to 60 MPH, while passenger trains such as the Zephyr are able to move up to 70 MPH. This stretch of track between Byers Canyon and Kremmling is the fastest the Zephyr goes between Denver and Glenwood Springs. The first car is the Silver Rapids. The second car is the Silver Solarium, and it was owned by the CB&Q and made the journey on the end of the train many, many, times! Due to the sudden speed change, UP has a detector set than, when an eastbound is detected, an automated voice comes on the radio reminding the train that they are approaching 20 MPH track. It is sometimes easy to forget just how sharp a freshly painted unit looks, especially when you are used to seeing 15-20 years old power, covered in coal, dust, dirt, oil, and grime! Note the interesting antennas on the top of UP 2696. I can only assume that these are somehow related to PTC (Positive Train Control), but I am not certain. Well, Amtrak has a Superliner with a similar ad for Cable Cars in San Francisco. Apparently, the car spent much of last year running on the Coast Starlight and has now moved to the California Zephyr. The engineer is now throttling up as track speed has increased from 20 MPH to 70 MPH! Despite Amtrak receiving a huge number of new baggage cars at the end of 2014, the new cars still haven't made an appearance on the Zephyr. Two P42DCs, a baggage car and eight Superliners. Depending on the numbers of bookings, the only real variance is that the Zephyr may have only seven Superliners or may in fact have nine. UP typically runs AC power on the MNYRO, shuttling several units to Glenwood Springs where they will be used as mid-train swing helpers.
