Running precisely on schedule, the westbound Zephyr approaches the grade crossing at 72nd Avenue in Arvada on its journey west. There had been a rumor the night before that one of Amtrak's Heritage units would be leading the Zephyr. Unfortunately, that rumor didn't pan out.

It is going to be a slow day on the Limon Sub! This is the first of only two trains that would run in daylight, the second being the Limon Local. The train is passing underneath the new Central Park Blvd overpass in the distance.

After spending the previous day in the mountains, this picture seemed particularly appropriate! This coal load is approaching the west end of Mesa on a clear signal.

Most of the siding of Mesa is on a 1% grade, climbing to the east. However, very close to the east switch is the top of a small hill and the tracks head back down a 1% grade. Here, a coal load is cresting the top of the grade at east Mesa.

A few miles west of Watkins, the KP wraps around a nice curve, crossing over a short bridge. The bridge is there to allow water to drain beneath the tracks, which are on a fill.

This shot pretty well says "welcome to the plains", don't you think? It is the first day of Spring and crops are starting to turn green! This coal train is between Watkins and Strasburg.

There is a long, straight stretch of track along the west end of Strasburg and a nice overpass in town from which to shoot from. In the distance, you can see I-70 and even Longs Peak, still standing tall along the Front Range.

Approaching the west switch of Byers, this coal load has just changed dispatchers. Up to this point, DS-86 has been responsible for the train. But, here at Byers (and milepost 595), the train moves in to DS-6 territory.

Just west of Byers, the KP crosses over West Bijou Creek on a very nice (and old) truss bridge. Here, the twice-weekly Limon Local passes over the bridge, moving at track speed (49 MPH). Nice power, no!?

If I had to pick a spot on the KP to spend an entire day, it would have to be Cedar Point. Eastbound trains climb up a 1.1% grade before diving back down a 1.3% grade. Coal trains will be moving very slowly on the approach and, like a roller coaster, quickly pick up speed on the downhill side. Here, a coal load is passing the west switch of the siding, getting ready to head down the hill in to Limon.

This coal train is now moving at track speed (49 MPH) after conquering the top of the hill at Cedar Point. It is now a downhill run for most of the next 80 miles in to Kit Carson. The siding of Cedar Point is less that 5,000 feet long and is only used for storage. In fact, the east switch has been completely severed from the mainline.

The Limon Local is making its way in to Cedar Point, only 15 miles away from its destination of Limon. Today's local is a very descent size with over 40 cars. A nice feature about Cedar Point is that the curve in the tracks allow for pretty good shots of both eastbounds and westbounds throughout the first half of the day.

With its destination in sight, the Limon Local has completed its near 90-mile run from Denver to Limon. The crew will now proceed with their switching in town. UP interchanges with the short line KYLE railroad in town. With no trains called out of Denver or Sharon Springs, the local will have plenty of time to do their work. Even with all the time, the local will ultimately be tied down in town and a relief crew will take the local back to Denver the following day.

As the Limon Local passes the distant signal on the approach to Limon, a wide angle look at the all-EMD power is warranted. An SD60M, a former Cotton Belt GP40-2 and a former Espee GP40M-2 make for a great sight. Both of the geeps were lashed up together last September, working on the West Local on the Rocky Spur!

This westbound manifest is pulling in to the siding at Wiggins. Here, it will sit and wait for the westbound ZCHIDEN to overtake it. Unfortunately, it would then still have to wait for an eastbound in the siding at Crest, also waiting on the Z-train.
