After a very, very dry winter along the Front Range, the snow is very much a welcome sight. The westbound Zephyr, running nearly an hour late, approaches the east switch at Leyden.

24 hours earlier, the scene at East Leyden was very different as the snow had not yet started falling.

It is a very Christmasy scene at Blue Mountain road crossing as the westbound California Zephyr approaches. This is the most snow the Front Range has seen all winter long!

Amtrak 809, a P40DC, is leading the westbound Zephyr on this morning. The P40DCs were delivered with 4,000 HP compared to the 4,250 in their P42DC successors. However, having gone through several rebuild programs, the P40s on the road now (including 809 in this picture) have had electrical upgrades and engine modifications from GE and are now rated at 4,250 HP as well.

Having successfully navigated the S-Curves at Blue Mountain, the westbound Zephyr is making the ascent from the base of Coal Creek Canyon toward Tunnel 1. The hotbox detector at MP 22.6 is visible in this shot.

Minutes after passing the grade crossing at Blue Mountain Road (for which the control box and tracks are visible in the foreground), the westbound Zephyr is about to disappear in to Tunnel 1 on its journey west.
