The Front Range in Colorado received what has been referred to as a "500 year flood" in the past week. Boulder County (northwest of Denver) received more rain in three days than the annual average for Denver! Consequently, five of the six rail lines in to and out of Denver had some degree of damage to them. The Moffat had it the worst though. A 500-foot portion of the fill in between Tunnels 2 and 3 completely failed and washed away, leaving the welded rail and ties dangling a couple hundred feet above the ground. Estimates are anywhere from 1-4 weeks before the line is open for traffic again! Here, one of four work trains sent to implement repairs heads west at Leyden. The train is loaded with large rocks, which presumably will be used in the creation of a new fill.

The devastating floods that Colorado endured the second week of September severely damaged the Moffat Tunnel Sub. Washouts at Rocky and west of Plain, rock slides throughout the Tunnel District and a derailed train near Cliff. The main track was taken out of service between West Leyden and West Cliff (roughly 25 miles) so crews to implement repairs. Here, at West Leyden, a work train filled with rock has just spoken with the EIC (Employee In Charge) of the OOS limits as well as DS-86 to get flagged past the red signal in to the OOS limits.

This rock-filled work train slowly creeps across the Indiana Street overpass just west of Leyden. The train is now in "out of service" limits, meaning the track is not under the control or jurisdiction of DS-86. Instead, the UP foreman in charge of the repair operation has jurisdiction over all trains and MOW in the limits. Switches are all taken in to hand throw and trains and MOW coordinate via radio. For safety, all movements are made at restricted speed, typically around 10 MPH.
