The early morning sun tries to break through the clouds and offer some nice light on this coal load, rolling east on a clear signal at the west end of Leyden. Evidence of the healthy snowfall in the Colorado high country can been observed on the plow of UP 5892. Also of interest is the stretch of red frame stripe on the anti-climber!

This view has changed pretty significantly over the course of the last 15 years. The neighborhood to the left ("Five Parks") was built just shy of 15 years ago. Back when the Rocky Flats cleanup project was underway, it was not uncommon to find a string of covered hoppers tied down on the house track. Out of the frame to the right stands Ralston Valley High School. It was built in 2000 to facilitate the growth in Arvada.

A trio of GE mid-train swing helpers, including two ES44ACs and an AC4400CW, pass the photographer. All three will be cut out of the train in Denver and the train will continue east in a 2x0x1 configuration. Of note, the third DPU here (UP 6315) started life as SP 269.

While coal trains on the UP are still dominated by GE (AC4400CWs, C44AC-CTEs and ES44ACs), EMDs are starting to appear more and more lately in the form of SD70ACes. Being an EMD guy, it is a great thing to see (and hear). An example was this (rather grungy) SD70ACe, acting as the sole DPU on the end of an eastbound coal load at Leyden.

Facing the "wrong way", UP 8338 brings up the rear of an eastbound coal train at Leyden. The train has a clear shot to Bypass 2 where the mid-train swing helpers will be cut out and the next crew will take the train east to the plains of Colorado.
