In this long lens shot, the West Local is looking very small as it descends down the grade toward the intermediate signal at MP 14.6. The local has clear signals...a straight shot in to Denver.

A trio of GP40-2s leads seven covered hoppers, loaded with aggregate, on the journey east toward Denver. After arriving in North Yard, the covered hoppers will be sorted in the yard and placed on the appropriate train (or trains) and sent to their destinations.

It is a very pleasant afternoon on this last day of winter for 2014. There have been a few work windows on the Moffat lately, so not a lot of trains are running during the day. Consequently, the West Local will have a straight shot to North Yard.

This eastbound BNSF manifest is descending the grade from Tunnel 1 toward the base of Coal Creek Canyon. In another minute, the lead units will be coming around the curve on the tracks in the foreground. In fact, you can see this in another picture by clicking here.

A few minutes earlier, this BNSF manifest was descending the grade in the distance where the tank cars are now. The train is looping around at the base of Coal Creek Canyon, now headed for the detector at MP 22.6. You can see BNSF 700 descending in the background in another picture by clicking here.

When I heard the dispatcher talking to "BNSF 700" at Plain, I got excited because I thought I was going to be shooting a Warbonnet leading on the Moffat. Alas, it turned out that BNSF 700 has been repainted in the New Image scheme. However, there is still a tiny bit of Warbonnet in the shot...see it?

This eastbound BNSF manifest got stuck holding the main for about 45 minutes at Plain. Maintenance was working on some ballast regulation around the curves here at Blue Mountain and Coal Creek. With maintenance finally in the clear, the train got the signal to head east. Here, the front of the train is approaching the grade crossing at Blue Mountain and the tail end of the train is just emerging from Tunnel 1.

Spring is less than 24 hours away, which means this scene will hopefully "green up" a bit in the next month of two. In the meantime, a few Yucca plants make up just about all the green - save for the pine trees - in the scene as an eastbound BNSF manifest loops around past the Blue Mountain Road grade crossing.
