The eastbound California Zephyr, running ahead of schedule, pops out of the east portal of the Moffat Tunnel. After the train clears the west switch, the fans in the tunnel will turn on to vent the exhaust from the tunnel. Once that process is complete, the (special) Ski Train will be able to load its passengers at Winter Park, just over six miles to the west.

While the equipment may have been different, it was pretty cool having the Ski Train back, if only for two days. It is hard to believe that as of this picture, it has been nearly six years since that final run of the original Ski Train. Here, Amtrak's special run of the Ski Train (which included seven Superliners) emerges from the east portal of the Moffat Tunnel.

How about a nice in-your-face shot of Amtrak's sharp-looking "Saluting Our Veterans" unit? In a very classy move, Amtrak sent the unit (along with another P42 and seven Superliners) to town for a special two-day run of Amtrak's own version of the Ski Train. Here, the train is approaching the grade crossing at Blue Mountain.

As the sun moves closer to the horizon and the shadows at Blue Mountain grow, the power for the (special) Ski Train pops out of one of the shadows and in to some glorious evening lighting. While it may look like just another Amtrak train, this special run of the Ski Train attracted a gaggle of railfans (myself, obviously, being no exception). There were no fewer than 10 other fans behind me, back toward the grade crossing.

Amtrak did a really great job of giving AMTK 42 a thorough scrub down in preparation for its two days on the Ski Train. Not much else to say for this shot other than thanks to all who have served our country!

As the eastbound Ski Train approaches the Simms Street grade crossing, thanks goes out to Amtrak (as well as Winter Park and Union Pacific) for putting together this train. It was a real class act and appears to have been a huge success. After six years of no Ski Train, it was great to have one to chase again, if only for two days.
