On a rainy Wednesday afternoon, BNSF's Buck Local sits tucked away at the south end of the Lafayette Branch. There is a southbound on the siding at Broomfield (which the Lafayette Branch connects with), so the local has nowhere to go. In the foreground, the north siding switch of Broomfield. Soon, this switch will be moved about 4,000 feet north of the its currently location.

A single SD70ACe leads this northbound coal empty north on the main at Broomfield. With the switches at both ends of Broomfield aligned for the main and a track warrant to MP 32, this empty is moving along at track speed. It look odd to see a single unit on the point of the train.

A pair of SD70s (an ACe and a MAC) push on the tail end of a northbound coal empty at Broomfield. The train is crossing over Nickel Street and passing underneath US-287. BNSF frequently sends coal empties, destined for the Powder River Basin, to reduce traffic on the Brush and Angora Subs.

I believe this train is an (empty) windmill blade train. I'm not entirely sure why it is headed south (since it is empty) as there is a windmill manufacturing plant in Windsor, CO. Regardless, the Norfolk Southern leader is a nice touch! If you look on the main (to the left of the train), you can see the future south siding switch for the siding of Broomfield.

That smoke coming off the engines doesn't look too good! Not to worry...it actually isn't smoke at all. As the train was sitting (and idling) in the siding, some of the falling rain accumulated on the radiator. When the engines throttled up (and heated up), the water turned to steam! With a new track warrant taking them all the way to Denver, this southbound has crossing Nickel Street.

July 8th was an extraordinarily cool and rainy day in the Denver area. So much rain was falling, in fact, that water was quickly building up in ditches and depressions. Such is the case here as a southbound (empty) windmill blade train proceeds on the siding at Broomfield. In the not too distant future, this shot will no longer be possible. BNSF is in the process of shifting the siding at Broomfield to the north, meaning this portion of the siding will soon be torn up.

Anybody feeling lucky? When you catch a Warbonnet looking as good as this one that just happens to have 777 as the number, seems like a good day to play the lottery!

A southbound (empty) windmill blade trains come around the big fill in Westminster. The train just met a northbound coal empty at Broomfield and now has a track warrant from the South Siding Switch Broomfield to Restricted Limits MP 4. That will take the train all the way in to Denver.

A leased Norfolk Southern C44-9W and a Warbonnet C44-9W (which looks to be in very good shape) coming around the big fill in Westminster with an empty windmill blade train. The fill had to originally be built in order to cross over the Big Dry Creek. Building a fill was apparently less expensive that build a large (curved) bridge.
