An eastbound manifest rolls down the main at Plain on an approach (yellow) signal. The manifest is meeting the westbound California Zephyr and DS-82 set the meet up perfectly! Neither train would end up having to stop, creating a "rolling meet".

This is quite possibly my favorite engine since the SD40T-2. Not just the SD70M, but the SD70M Phase II with the slightly angled radiators. I'll gladly nab a roster shot of one of these whenever I get the chance.

As an eastbound manifest rolls slowly down the main at Plain, the westbound California Zephyr glides west on the siding toward the grade crossing. You may notice that the baggage car looks quite new and shiny. Amtrak recently put in a huge order for baggage cars and are replacing all of them. It took some time, but they are finally showing up on the Zephyr! It is interesting to note that the baggage car is wearing the Phase III paint scheme...

Starting from when I was downtown early on this morning and learned that the California and Kansas would be departing on the back end of the Zephyr, I had this exact shot in mind! The California and the Kansas rolling through Plain in the snow on the back of Amtrak. This could almost be a shot from 1985 when Rio Grande used to, on occasion, run its business cars on Amtrak between Denver and Salt Lake!

As some low hanging clouds grip the top of the snow-spotted Flat Irons, we say goodbye to the Zephyr and the private cars California and Kansas. They are no strangers to the Tunnel District and hope that they don't stay away for too long. This seems like a fitting picture to bring a close to 2015!
