It is a beautiful January morning as an eastbound UP coal load rolls past a clear (green) signal at the intermediate signal at MP 16.1. While relatively rare in 2024, UP does still load a handful of coal trains on the North Fork Branch at the West Elk Mine, this train being one such example.

Finally getting clear of the sharp curves of the mountains, the Provo-Denver exists the east end of Barbara's Gulch. The train will not be able to speed up much, however, as the signal is displaying an Advanced Approach (flashing yellow) aspect. The reason being that the train is taking the siding at Leyden to tie down. The crew will be picked up by a van and a relief crew will take the train in to town later in the day.

BNSF mainly moves tank cars between Denver and Salt Lake City (well, Provo) over the Moffat. However, every once in awhile, you'll see something less common, such as these track bins riding in well cars past the intermediate signal at MP 16.1 in Barbara's Gulch.

BNSF's Denver-Provo passes by an Approach Diverging (yellow over yellow) signal on the approach to Rocky. The train is running in and out of the siding at Rocky due to maintenance on the main. Closer to the top of the frame, you can see some of the hundreds of new houses that have been built in the northwest Arvada neighborhood of Candelas. Indeed, some portions of the neighborhood are still under construction!

This westbound coal empty, headed for the West Elk Mine on the North Fork Branch, has some very rare units (in Colorado, anyway) on the head end. It's been years since a non-local train on the Moffat was led by a spartan cab unit!

A westbound BNSF manifest approaches a clear signal at MP 16.1, just east of Rocky. The train will be meeting an eastbound coal load at Eisele (formerly Clay). In fact, if you look closely, you'll see said coal train already holding the main at Eisele in the distance!

About twenty minutes after sunset, a westbound BNSF manifest slowly pulls into the siding at Plain. The train will wait for the eastbound Zephyr, which is running on time. By the time the Zephyr arrived, it was too dark to get any shots. A few more weeks or so and that will no longer be the case!

This is quite possibly my favorite engine since the SD40T-2. Not just the SD70M, but the SD70M Phase II with the slightly angled radiators. I'll gladly nab a roster shot of one of these whenever I get the chance.

The westbound Zephyr is about to knock down a clear signal at MP 16.1 (nicknamed Plastic). In the distance, you can see some cars driving on CO-93. The train is about to enter Barbara's Gulch and slow down quite a bit. Near the base of shadows up on the mountain, you can also see the tracks running through Eisele (formerly Clay).

It is about ten minutes past sunset and really only one word comes to mind when looking at this scene: COLD! This crew brought the train from Bond, CO and will soon be at the end of their journey in Denver. The train will continue east on the KP Line to the plains.

With clear signals all the way to Denver, this eastbound coal load makes its way through a frost-filled scene between Leyden and Rocky. The temperature was just 17°F...a curious low-hanging layer of clouds hung around the area of Big Ten Loop, visible in the distance.

An EMD-led empty ballast train heads east out of Barbara's Gulch on clear signals. It is unusual to find an SD9043MAC on the Moffat these days and even more unusual to find one on the point of a train! In the distance, the MNYGJ pulls west through Clay.

After meeting each other at Rocky, the MNYGJ continues west on the main at Clay while an empty ballast train passes by the intermediate signal at MP 16.1. The distance between the trains has expanded to about five (rail) miles.

Silver aluminum cars do a nice job reflecting the rapidly setting sun as this eastbound coal load makes its way out of Barbara's Gulch. In the distance, you can see the tracks running along the base of the mountains at Clay.

How many trains do you see in this picture? If your first reaction is "only one", look again! As a coal empty approaches the intermediate signal below Rocky, the MNYGJ proceeds west (geographically north) on the mainline at Clay way off in the distance.
