Not only has the amount of traffic on the Moffat taken a pretty serious nose dive, but the traffic that is still running has a tendency to be extremely short! Case-in-point is this BNSF Denver-Provo. It is headed west with only 32 cars! 30 tank cars, a covered hopper, and a box car. The CSX units were a nice surprise, though.

A pair of visitors from the east help out a classic Heritage 2 C44-9W on a westbound manifest at Leyden. CSX classifies these units as ES44AHs. They are essentially ES44ACs, but with a few minor differences. First off, they weigh 432,000 pounds instead of 415,000 pounds. They also have software tweaks that, combined with the increased weight, provide for a higher tractive effort at lower speeds.

I think the dark blue of the CSX paint scheme contrasts quite nicely with fresh snow on the ground. This ES44AH, and its brother, are taking a BNSF manifest (Denver to Provo) west along with a BNSF C44-9W, which was on the point. The newest CSX logo is an interesting one, is it not?

I don't typically shoot from the north side of the tracks at Leyden, simply because the light isn't generally good from the north side. However, with an overcast sky, the lighting for this westbound was just fine. As you can see, the train is proceeding west on a clear signal at West Leyden. The new housing developments (called Leyden Ranch and Leyden Rock) can be seen in the distance.

Two words: Tonnage reduction! In the past, BNSF's Denver to Provo manifest almost always has at least one DPU on the rear end. Not today though. The three units on the point are more than enough to handle the 30 tank cars, covered hopper, and box car on this train. Fewer trains and shorter trains on the Moffat...
