It is less than ten minutes past dawn as the westbound Winter Park Express (the new Ski Train) approaches a clear signal at the east switch of Leyden. Downtown Denver is already bathed in morning sunlight. The tracks at Leyden still hide in the shadows of the hill to the east.

Just as the first run of the 2018 Winter Park Express passes the east switch of Leyden, the sun explodes over the hill to the east, giving the entire scene a wonderful red/orange morning glow. The new Ski Train has eight Baggage Coach Superliners for the trip.

For this years Winter Park Express, Amtrak brought in one of their Heritage Units...specifically, the Phase 1 "Bloody Nose" unit sports a modern take on Amtrak's first paint scheme. Here, the train is highballing the east switch at Plain.

Under partly cloudy skies, the first run of the 2018 Winter Park Express (Amtrak's own take on the Ski Train) heads west on the main at Plain. Unfortunately, Amtrak was unable to get the F40PH "cab" unit that they had last year, meaning the power here will have to run around the train at Fraser each day before returning back east.

This year's Winter Park Express has three Superliners with a bright pink wrap on them! Hopefully the wrap will stand out to motorists that might just see it and decide a trip up to Winter Park by train sounds like a good idea!
