12 1/2 miles west of Denver Union Station, the standard pair of P42DCs have the westbound Zephyr running right on time on a clear January morning.

Seven Superliners is a pretty typical consist for the Zephyr in the winter months as this time of year tends to see fewer bookings. The train is charging west at about 60 MPH (track speed) as it hustles through Leyden. The train has to take advantage of the higher track speed while it can, because in another four miles or so, it's time to slow to about 30 MPH!

The Zephyr has a clear signal at the west end of Leyden as it prepares to take on the Rocky Mountains. In the distance, to the left of the Zephyr, you can clearly see the hopper cars on Big Ten Loop.

An SD70ACe and an C44AC-CTE lead an eastbound coal load just west of Leyden. This coal train was loaded at West Elk on the North Fork Branch. Coal traffic on the Craig Branch (to the Energy Mine) has all but disappeared in the past few weeks.

Coal that was loaded at the West Elk Mine in western Colorado is headed for export. The customer is Javelin Global Commodities and the train will be turned over to Canadian National at Convent, LA.

Dynamic brakes are whining from the standard trio of mid-train swing helpers on this eastbound coal load as it passes by the west signal of Leyden.

This is a new perspective of West Leyden for me. We are looking across the field from one of the open trails in the new neighborhood of Leyden Ranch. This coal load is headed for the Gulf Coast for export.
