I realize there is no train to be found in this shot, but I just couldn't help but post this anyway! As I was waiting for the westbound Zephyr, I noticed this Bald Eagle sitting on a rock near Welton Reservoir. I had to shoot through a chainlink fence which is why there is some way out of focus lines through the image. When I got out of the car to shoot over the fence, the eagle flew off.

The westbound Zephyr is running about 25 minutes behind schedule because it had to pick up two private cars that spent the weekend in Denver.

On a partly cloudy February morning, the westbound Zephyr approaches a clear signal at the intermediate at MP 14.5. The Zephyr is just about to receive a slow order from the dispatcher. Trains are limited to 10 MPH around Big Ten Loop at the moment due to very high winds. An occurrence not at all uncommon!

The westbound Zephyr has two extra cars it is giving a ride to! The Silver Rapids and the Silver Solarium came in to Denver on the eastbound Zephyr the previous Friday. Today, they are headed back home to California.

All of the cars on the westbound Zephyr are veterans of passengers service. But the last two, even more so! The Silver Solarium (the domed car) celebrates its 70th Birthday here in 2018! As much as I love the CB&Q dome, I sure wish Rio Grande's version...the Silver Sky...could be restored. It is currently for sale (as of this picture) if someone has $25,000 burning a hole in their pocket!

It is so great that a few of these Budd-built cars have been saved! It's been 35 years since cars like these regularly traversed the Moffat. Here, the Silver Rapids and Silver Solarium head for their home base in California after a weekend visit to the Mile High City.

A last look at the Silver Rapids and Silver Solarium on the tail end of the westbound Zephyr, as the train disappears in to Tunnel 4 west of Plain. Safe trip home back California, old friends!
