UP 1996 was the second out on the westbound MNYGJ. The train was originally called for 20:30 the night before, but the train was delayed for unknown reasons and ended up departing in the morning. The train is passing the west switch of Eisele here.

Five units lead the MNYGJ on a sunny December morning as the train climbs its way up toward Tunnel 1 from the base of Coal Creek Canyon. One of UP's six Heritage Units, UP 1996, is second out in the consist.

Like each of the six Heritage Units, UP 1996 is an artistic representation of some of the various schemes Espee had over the years. It is really a mix of two schemes: the "Daylight" scheme and the "Black Widow" scheme. Here, the colorful unit is headed west toward Grand Junction on the MNYGJ.

On a clear and temperate December morning, the sound of six UP units (five on the point and one tail end DPU) echoes off the mountains at Blue Mountain as the MNYGJ-10 approaches the east portal of Tunnel 1. Last Wednesday, the final MNYRO left North Yard, running across the Grande to Roper in Salt Lake City. The MNYRO usually carried a cut of cars for Grand Junction. With UP stopping the MNYRO (and MRONY), they have started an MNYGJ (and MGJNY) three times a week to move cars headed to or from Grand Junction. Note UP 1996 is second in the head end consist.
