A trio of SD70ACes lead a somewhat unusual late-afternoon run of the MGJNY. Second out in the consist is UP 1996, the Espee Heritage Unit. Here, the train is emerging from Tunnel 1 in low afternoon light with a few coal hoppers at the front of the train.

Daylight grows short and shadows grow long on the first Monday after the end of Daylight Savings Time as the MGJNY rolls east on the main at Leyden. With the radical decrease in demand for coal, what little demand there is often runs in blocks on the front of the MGJNY. Such is the case here.

UP 1996 is in brilliant late afternoon November light as the MGJNY passes by an Advanced Approach (flashing yellow) signal on the main at the east end of Leyden. The train made great time from Grand Junction. I did not think the train would make it before sunset, but was pleasantly surprised when it did.

One of my favorite spots to shoot in the Denver area is at East Leyden. A few good trees and interesting railroad equipment in the shot, with the east slope of the Rocky Mountains in the background. A trio of SD70ACes lead the MGJNY out of Leyden on the main, UP 1996 being second.

The Espee Heritage Unit (UP 1996) has become the unit (out of the six on UP's roster) that I have actually caught the most in the last couple years. The unit is certainly unique, wearing a scheme reminiscent of Espee Daylight Scheme mixed with the Black Widow Scheme.
