After a total drop off of oil trains, there have been rumblings that they may start to pick up again. Evidence that may be the case showed up on the last day of November when a loaded UP oil train came east off the Moffat. The train started in Helper and took 36 hours to make it to Denver! Note the new construction occurring on the north side of the tracks. Several multi-family homes and a few businesses (including a gas station) are being built here.

An eastbound oil train roles east down the main at Leyden. This is the first UP oil train on the Moffat since April! The train loaded near Helper, UT and got held up at Bond for multiple hours. There was no rested crew when the train arrived, and then, once a crew was available, another unit needed to be added to the train. UP 8619 was the one added, giving the train five units for the climb up to the Moffat Tunnel from Tabernash.

A bit more than halfway between switches on the main at Leyden, an eastbound loaded oil train weighing over 12,000 tons slowly rolls east on clear signals. The crew on the train, which started their day on the train at Bond, had to add a unit to the train. This, along with the slow speed of the train headed up grade on the west slope, resulted in the crew being on duty for 11 hours at the time of this picture!

An eastbound oil train crosses the grade crossing at 80th Avenue, the only grade crossing between Leyden and North Yard that is not a quiet zone, meaning trains still use their horns here. In the middle of a workday on a Monday, only a single car is currently being stopped by the train.

A pair of GEs, facing nose-to-nose, bring up the tail end of this eastbound loaded oil train. Upon reaching Denver, the train will get a new crew and will then continue north on the Greeley Sub to Cheyenne. In the past, oil trains have often gone east on the KP, but that will not be the case this time.
