Winter is refusing to let go in Colorado as evidenced by the snow still covering the ground. Meanwhile, the westbound BNSF Denver-Provo knocks down a clear signal at the east switch of Leyden. The train is the first of two westbounds coming out of Denver back-to-back this morning.

Life has been going through its typical ebbs and flows that everyone experiences, which is why I have not made it out much in 2021 to get trackside. However, it was great to be taking some pictures again on this morning, capturing the Denver-Provo at Leyden just after 10am.

These days, it is a little bit of a rarity to find a trio of C44-9Ws leading a BNSF train. It is far more common to find some ES44s in the mix! However, the such a trio of 90s power leads here, second out being a former Santa Fe Warbonnet.

The few-remaining Warbonnets still roaming the rails are in pretty rough shape! BNSF 630 is one such example. Other than the patch on the cab, this Warbonnet never wore the BNSF livery. And now, as you can see, the long hood has largely been repainted silver. Still, if it has to be repainted, it is nice that BNSF matches the silver rather than just painting it orange.

Three units lead a westbound UP coal empty out of Leyden. The train is following a few blocks behind a BNSF Denver-Provo. The coal empty is headed for the only-remaining mine on the North Fork, West Elk. Rumor has it that the mine has picked up a new contract that might produce 20 or so trains in the next few weeks or months. While not a ton, it is better than nothing.

Hallelujah! A UP coal train on the Moffat! Who, in 2004, would have thought that was something that would one day be said. Once the life blood of the Moffat, coal trains are now few and far between. Days and even weeks will pass between them. However, got lucky on this Saturday morning with an empty heading for the mine at West Elk on the North Fork branch. The train is just west of Leyden.

At the west end of Barbara's Gulch, an AC4400CW is "in your face" as it rounds the curve from under CO-93, toward a clear signal at the east switch of Rocky.

After waiting in the siding at Rocky to meet two westbound, the Provo-Denver now has clear signals for the rest of the run in to Denver. Here, the train is approaching the intermediate at Chemical, west of Leyden.

A Warbonnet C44-9W and an ES44C4 bring up the rear of the eastbound of the Provo-Denver just east of the intermediate at Chemical. Would be great if a Warbonnet would lead on the Moffat again. However, leaders on the Moffat are now required to be PTC-equipped, and I do not know if BNSF has put PTC equipment in any Warbonnets.
