In roughly two weeks, the Zephyr will be returning as a daily train on the Moffat! Until then, it is still a thrice-weekly train. Tuesday is one of the days it heads west, and here heading west on the main at Leyden under gloomy skies. Great to see nine Superliners back in the consist!

30 years ago, Leyden was considered to be "out in the boonies". Now, it is in the middle of suburbia! The Zephyr has the neighborhood of Five Parks on the left side of the shot and some older neighborhoods as well as one of Arvada's four high schools, Ralston Valley, on the right side of the shot. The Zephyr here is stopped on the main, waiting for BNSF's Provo-Denver.

A fairly short BNSF Provo-Denver approaches a Diverging Approach (red over yellow) signal at the west end of Leyden while it passes over Indiana Street in West Arvada. The train already has a signal out the other end of the siding to continue on toward Denver.

With as few trains running on the Moffat these days as there are, the dispatcher is probably a bit out of practice in timing perfect meets! The Zephyr sat on the main at the west end of Leyden for about ten minutes while waiting for BNSF's Provo-Denver to show up. A Rocky meet would have been a bit more expeditious for the Zephyr.

The Zephyr sits patiently on the main at Leyden as it waits for BNSF's Provo-Denver to clear the west switch at Leyden. The dispatcher has a route "stacked" in to the computer and, as soon as the manifest clears the switch in the siding, the switch will align for the main and Amtrak will get a clear signal to continue west!

After meeting an eastbound BNSF manifest and now looking at a clear signal, both P42s on this morning's Zephyr throttle up as they start pulling west, ready to accelerate up to track speed.

AMTK 10 is looking at a signal that recently cleared (turned green). The engineer is putting the proverbial pedal to the metal as the train starts accelerating. As far as trains go, the Zephyr can actually start and reach track speed quite fast because it is so light relative to other trains.

As the westbound Zephyr accelerates west out of Leyden and over Indiana Street, it should be noted that this is a scene that continue to change and indeed has the potential to change even more in the coming years. New houses are being built on the north side of the tracks. Indeed, the classic Rio Grande bridge over Indiana Street may be living on borrowed time. There is a push to widen Indiana Street from two lanes to four lanes through here. That would necessitate a slight grade realignment for a new, wider bridge. There currently is no funding for the project, so, for now, the old bridge is safe.
