Three GEs, with an SD70ACe second, lead an eastbound BNSF manifest on the main at Eisele (Clay). The train is following hot on the heals of UP's MGJNY, which is currently down at Rocky.

Following about three blocks behind UP's MGJNY is BNSF's Provo-Denver. These are the only two eastbound manifests that will run over the Moffat today. Lately, it has become fairly common for the two trains to be closely following one another in the morning hours, setting up a great bit of action. Here, the train is passing a string of gondolas at Leyden.

BNSF 6241 leads the Provo-Denver at the east end of Leyden. Note that the derail is set on the siding at Leyden. This is set to protect a string of 40 (or so) gondolas that are tied down in the siding. For whatever reason, UP has decided that Leyden is a great place to store cars long term.

A single ES44AC brings up the tail end of BNSF's Provo-Denver at the east end of Leyden. Typically, BNSF runs this train in a 3x2 configuration, but on this particular morning, the eastbound is configured 4x1.

RMRX 8021 and RMRX 8020 lead the Rocky Mountaineer out of Plain, rolling east toward the west portal of Tunnel 1. The train is running right on time, having departed from Glenwood Springs earlier this morning.

The Rocky Mountaineer GP40-3s lead the train out of the east portal of Tunnel 1. After making its way out to Moab, UT, the power ran around the train, and is now coupled to the power car for the trip east.

From above on the hillside, we see the Rocky Mountaineer rolling east at the base of Coal Creek Canyon. The train is crossing over CO-72. From this perspective, you can clearly see the east portal of Tunnel 1, the final tunnel the train passed through on its way back to Denver.

I really love it when the Rocky Mountaineer GP40-3s are running on the train. It immediately takes me back several decades to when the Moffat was run by Rio Grande and spartan cab EMDs. Not only do they look great coming by Blue Mountain Drive here, but the sound of the classic EMD prime movers is really great as well.

A final shot of the eastbound Rocky Mountaineer as the train proceeds beyond Blue Mountain Drive and toward the west end of Eisele. Unfortunately, this would be the final shot taken on this day, as my drone developed an error with the vision sensors, preventing it from taking off again. Fortunately, by the end of the day, the drone was already in the care of UPS, off to the repair shop.
