A UP work train is tied down in the house track at Rocky. A maintenance crew is discussing the plan for the day ahead. Two light units will come out of North Yard later to hook on to the train. Rumor has it that UP's maintenance project on the Moffat is going to stop nearly all trains between 6am and 6pm.

Stacks of ties and gondolas of tie plates paint a picture of maintenance in the house track at Rocky. Some maintenance crews are on the end of the caboose (or "shoving platform"), getting ready to start the days work.

AMTK 204 is the first P42DC in the 200s (as far as I know) to sport the new Phase 7 paint scheme. Slowly, Amtrak is going through the process of repainting the entire P42DC fleet in Phase 7 colors. Here, the morning Zephyr is climbing the north edge of Big Ten curve.

The Zephyr just knocked down a green signal at the east switch of Eisele. I've mentioned it before in other captions, but I actually do like the Phase 7 paint scheme. While the Phase 5 scheme certainly grew on me over the course of roughly 20 years, the Phase 7 scheme really pops.

Throughout the summer, the Zephyr has been running with nine Superliners: a transition sleeper, three standard sleepers, a diner, a lounge car, and three coaches. However, there are only seven Superliners this morning. A sleeper and a coach have been dropped from the consist. This may signal that the summer rush is over and bookings are down. Here, the Zephyr is headed west on the main at Eisele, running right on time.
