This westbound Z-train has a single SD70ACe bringing up the rear as it hustles toward a crew change in Cheyenne on Main 2. Most of the train consist of COFCs (Container of Flat Car), but there are a few TOFCs (Trailer on Flat Car) with UPS trailers as well.

After briefly stopping to wait for a westbound Z-train to come by at the crossover at Hillsdale, UP 4014 has the train on the move at 50 MPH (or so) on Main 2, just about 20 miles east of Cheyenne.

UP 4014 and train are just about nine miles away from their first maintenance stop at Pine Bluffs, WY. here at Egbert, the train is on Main 2 as it passes by a 10,000 foot siding (off of Main 1) and the connection to the Yoder Subdivision. The Yoder line cuts north through Wyoming connecting the Laramie Sub to the South Morrill Sub western Nebraska.

UP 4014 has come to a stop on Main 2 in Pine Bluffs, WY so some standard maintenance can be done. The Big Boy stops every 50-75 miles when out on excursions to ensure everything is greased up and running as it should be.

UP's steam chief Ed Dickens and several members of the steam team are applying water to an air pipe on the front of the Big Boy. During the maintenance stop, a gasket blew on the main reservoir. The team is going to have to remove the pipe and replace the gasket. In order to remove the defective piece, it needs to be cooled down.

After blowing a gasket during its maintenance stop at Pine Bluffs, WY, the steam team took out the pipe with the defective gasket and replaced the gasket in the tool car. A member of the team now has the repair section of pipe, and is bringing it back to the head end of the Big Boy.

The UP steam team works to replace a pipe that connects to the main air reservoir after replacing a gasket that blew. Once the pipe is reinstalled, a few more standard maintenance tasks will take place prior to departing eastbound.

Not too long prior to departure from Pine Bluffs, the steam team has replaced the Wyoming flag with the Nebraska flag on the front of Big Boy. This is one of the super classy things UP does, flying the flag of whatever state the Big Boy is (primarily) running in after a stop. Pine Bluffs, WY sits on the border with Nebraska, so in less than a mile, the train will be in Nebraska.

I do not claim to know much about how steam locomotives work, but when UP 4014 starts pulling, it frequently lets a little steam free from the pistons, making for a cool scene. such is the case here at Pine Bluffs, WY as the train starts up to continue east.

Under partly cloudy skies, UP 4014 follows along US-30 in western Nebraska between Bushnell and Kimball. It was pretty great watching the train move east with the Big Boy as the only power on the train!

UP 4014 never fails to attract a huge crowd. Not only those who might characterize themselves as railfans, but even the general public that find steam cool will often make their way trackside. This afternoon, the parade of cars paralleling the train on US-30 is long as the train continues east.

Working to outrun the clouds drifting across the sky, UP 4014 makes its way through an S-curve at the location know as "Point of Rocks". One of the more interesting terrain features in the relatively flat terrain of Nebraska.
