Yard Shots Utah Railway
Utah Railway 5004 was built by Morrison Knudsen in August 1995 as an MK5000C. The unit, one of six, had a 5,000 HP caterpillar prime mover. The six units were great for hauling heavy coal trains, but developed some mechanical issues. In 2003, they were rebuilt as MK50-3s, with their prime movers and alternators replaced with those from retired SD50s. They served on Utah Railway until 2017. After the decline of the coal, Genessee and Wyoming (parent company of Utah Railway) reassigned the six units to another railroad they owned, the KYLE in Colorado and Kansas. Increasingly, the units were being used for parts. Last month (June 2026), it was announced that UTAH 5004 will be preserved at the Utah State Railway Museum in Ogden, UT. In this shot, the unit is in North Yard in Denver, making its way toward Ogden.

BNSF's HDENLAU (Denver to Laurel) manifest sits on the "New North Main" alongside BNSF's Rennicks Intermodal Facility. This is one of two such facilities in Denver, the other being Union Pacific's by their 36th Street Yard. The manifest will cross UP's Belt Lead at Utah Junction before leaving town.

Front Range (BNSF) CSX, BNSF
Like all the Class 1 Railroads (except for BNSF), CSX has several heritage units. The CSX units do not make it to Denver very often, so I was glad I had the chance to capture the P&LE (Pittsburg & Lake Erie Railroad). The P&LE was under the control of New York Central (and later Penn Central) until 1970 when Penn Central declared bankruptcy. CSX ultimately purchased the P&LE in the early 1990s, leading to the eventual creation of the 15th CSX heritage unit, painted at the Waycross shops in 2024.
