After several hours of thunderstorms, there was a 10 minute break in the clouds, allowing for some fantastic sunlight to break through. Shots from the north side of the bridge are hard to get due to lighting, but the overcast skies made it possible on this June 1st. The train is following a coal load, and is actually making better time than the coal load, so the grain train will make a few stops at (red) intermediate signals as it continues south. After all, a CN/CSX lash up is rare enough, but it is almost unheard of in Colorado. CN 3368, an AC44C6M, and CSX 3293, an ET44AH, lead the way south on Main 1 in perfect afternoon light on Super Bowl Sunday. Between these two trains meeting at Evans Avenue, there are four units, each from a different railroad. Only one of which is "native" to Colorado. Of particular interest is the Canadian Nation ET44AC from north of the border and the Ferromex SD70ACe from south of the border! However, BNSF changed things up and it was called at 11am! I was up at Crescent when I got the news, and I immediately headed south so i could get some shots of the northern visitor. The SD70M-2 was not widely popular, with only 331 being produced between 2005 and 2011. The majority of the units went to Canadian National and Norfolk Southen. None of those 331 units went to western railroads (UP, BNSF, etc). By comparison, over 2,000 SD70ACes have been produced and are still in the EMD catalog in 2024. At first glance, you might (reasonably) assume that this is an SD70ACe. However, it is actually an SD70M-2.
