A very colorful consist emerges from the east portal of Tunnel One. Only two of the six units on the head end of this eastbound are BNSF, but the train itself is indeed BNSF. The first three units were on a Denver-Provo which I shot a few days ago on Thursday.

Looking down from high above the east end of Cliff, we find a Ferromex ES44AC, a KCS SD70ACe, a pair of BNSFs and a pair of Norfolk Southern units all leading the Provo-Lincoln. The train is about to cross over South Boulder Creek and enter 29, the west end of the Tunnel District.

An eastbound BNSF Provo-Lincoln has a "rainbow" consist as it rounds the bend toward the east switch of Cliff. This train was at Glenwood Springs at 7:22am...so he made impressive time to be here at Cliff five hours later!

Interestingly, the three units on the point of this westbound are all older (relatively speaking...late 90s and early 2000s) power, yet the two DPUs on the tail end are quite a bit newer. Alas, they are both facing west, so "going away" shots wouldn't be the best.

It is not uncommon for railfans to joke that BNSF and Norfolk Southern should merge...after all, "NS" already makes up the middle two letters of "BNSF". Then, of course, there are trains like this in which you have a nice mix of both BNSF and NS power! The Denver-Provo is pulling west through Barbara's Gulch.

A pair of DPUs brings up the tail end of BNSF's Denver-Provo manifest west of Leyden on a frigid morning. The first unit (to the left) is an ET44C4 - GE's newest model - and the second unit (to the right) is a C44-9W, a staple in BNSF's fleet since the early 2000s.

It is an interesting mix of blue sky and clouds (and snow) as a westbound BNSF manifest moves at track speed. Almost as interesting as the weather is the power on the train. A New Image ES44DC, a Heritage 2 C44-9W, and a Heritage "Goat Boat" C44-9W lead up the train west.

It's a chilly morning out (about 20°F) as BNSF's Denver-Provo manifest dashes west through some freshly fallen snow west of Leyden. The train should have a straight shot through to Grand Junction with minimal delays as there isn't much rolling on the Moffat on this first day of winter.
