BNSF's engine house in Denver tends to be feast or famine...and, as you can tell, it was feasting on this morning! Cascade green, an SD70MAC in the "Green and Cream" scheme, Heritage, Heritage 2, New Image, Tier 4, and Kansas City Southern are all represented in this one shot!

BNSF 573 is one of a very few B40-8s that are still on BNSF's active roster. This unit was delivered in April of 1989 to Santa Fe. Many of its brothers have turned in to parts donors for units like 573 that are still active. The unit was sitting by itself near the engine house on this December morning.

BNSF: Through the years! A nice collection of power and paint schemes in these four units. It includes an ES44DC in the New Image scheme, a pre-production ES44AC in the Heritage 2 scheme, a C44-9W "Goat Boat" in the Heritage scheme, and a C44-9W in the Heritage 2 scheme.

After spending a few hours in the siding at Leyden, BNSF's yard in Denver is finally read for this Provo-Lincoln manifest. DS-86 had issued a crossing protection order for the grade crossing at Simms Street, but the crossing was repaired and the dispatcher contacted the conductor and was voiding the order right around the time this shot was being taken. Had the order not been voided, the train would have had to come to a stop at Simms Street to have the conductor protected the crossing as the train entered it.

Geez, it's almost like it's 2004 again! I don't specifically recall the last time I saw two C44-9Ws, both in Heritage 2 paint, leading a BNSF train on the Moffat (or anywhere, for that matter). Yet, such is the case here as a Lincoln-Denver leaves the siding at Leyden, headed for Denver.

A lone DPU on the tail end of an eastbound BNSF manifest helps to slow the train with its dynamic brakes as the train enters the siding Leyden. This is a telephoto shot from CO-72 looking south at the train, hence the backlighting.

A single ES44DC brings up the tail end of this eastbound Provo-Denver, which consists primarily of tank cars. I framed the image this way because, being the sole DPU unit, the engine is facing the "wrong way" for the most ideal photograph.

While BNSF has certainly invested in EMD engines in the past decade or so with the purchase of SD70ACes, they still by far prefer GE. In the last decade (or so), BNSF has purchased 810 SD70ACes. By comparison, they've purchased over 2,600 ES44s. So while seeing a BNSF SD70ACe is not super rare, it is also not uncommon to find a train with an all-GE consist.

This eastbound BNSF manifest has a Denver-based crew on board, which is a little unusual. Why is that? Since the start of 2016, BNSF trains on the Moffat typically run with Grand Junction-based crews. BNSF used to have a crew change point at Kremmling. Denver-based crews ran the trains Denver to Kremmling (and vice versa). Grand Junction-based crews ran the trains Kremmling to Grand Junction (and vice versa). After that crew change point was eliminated, Grand Junction-based crews now take the trains all the way to Denver. That is, if they have time! The Grand Junction crew "died" (ran out of hours to work) at Crescent, and the train held there for a few hours earlier in the day. A Denver crew was sent up to take the train the remaining 30-ish miles in to town.

BNSF's Provo-Denver manifest has six units today, set up 5x(0)x1. The fourth unit is a rare one indeed...a former BC Rail C40-8M! The train has just passed the intermediate signal at MP 14.5 and will take the siding at Leyden for a few hours as the yard in Denver is not yet ready to receive the train.

A handful of non-covered hoppers are on the P-Burg local here, but by far the fracking sand cars rule the train. Power is setup in a 3x3x1 configuration, giving the train roughly 2.4 HPT (horsepower per ton). The bare minimum for the Moffat is right around 2.0 HPT. Anything much less than that and trains would stall out on the hill.

This Denver-Provo is about to knock down an approach (yellow) signal at the east end of Rocky. Maintenance is in the process of clearing up on Big Ten, so the train will have a clear signal at the west end of Rocky.

A pair of units push on the end of a westbound BNSF manifest at Leyden. On this particular morning, I was without my standard cameras for awhile, so this shot was actually taken with my iPhone.

A British Columbia C40-8M (now owned by Canadian National) assists BNSF's Denver-Provo on the journey west. BC Rail and Canadian National both got a lot of these cowl units with the walkways on the inside. Presumably so they are easier to navigate in rough winter weather.

The Moffat has seen a lot of foreign power lately. CSX, Norfolk Southern, Kansas City Southern, Canadian Pacific, and British Columbia have all appeared on the Moffat. And just within the last two weeks! Two of those railroads were on this train. Here, the CP unit is third out on the Denver-Provo.
