I do my best to nab a "boring" 3/4 roster shot whenever foreign power comes through town. Such was the case on this morning as a Norfolk Southern C44-9W was third out on BNSF's Denver-Provo manifest.

There has been a noticeable lack of snow in Colorado so far during the 2017-2018 winter season. Granted the snowiest two months for Colorado are March and April, but it is a little odd that virtually no snow has fallen thus far! This Denver-Provo is pulling west toward a clear signal after meeting two eastbounds at Leyden on this dry December morning.

With the day be a colder one (right around freezing), the heat being generated by these 13,200 ponies is definitely visible as the engineer throttles up and starts rolling toward a clear signal at the west end of Leyden.

An eastbound empty sand train rolls down the main at Leyden on an approach signal (as it is following a UP manifest). Meanwhile, the crew on a westbound Denver-Provo gets ready to throttle up as DS-86 is getting them a clear signal out the west end of Leyden.

BNSF almost certainly hauls more freight tonnage, excluding coal trains, on the Moffat these days than UP does! Here, a westbound BNSF Denver-Provo meets an eastbound BNSF empty sand train at Leyden. I have definitely noticed that more and more older units are being repainted in to the "New Image" scheme.

DPU on the back of a westbound? Nope! This is actually the sole unit on the point of this eastbound unit covered hopper train! These are empty sand cars coming back east from Utah. The train actually does have a single DPU on the end, so it is configured 1x1.

A trio of GEs, set up elephant-style, rest in the siding at Leyden on a Provo-bound manifest. The westbound already met a UP manifest and is now waiting on a BNSF covered hopper train before getting a signal to head west. The train is not particularly long and is holding back a few hundred feet from the west switch.

DS-86 set up a great meet between UP's MRONY and BNSF's HDENPVO on this morning. It could have been close to a rolling meet, except for the fact that the BNSF train will actually be meeting two here at Leyden.

It is an absolutely beautiful Colorado morning, particularly considering it is the start of December! With temperatures around 55°F, this Provo-Denver manifest leaves Rocky on a clear signal. C44-9Ws used to rule BNSF manifest on the Moffat. However, they are already starting to become outdated as more and more "Evolution Series" units are showing up! Nice to catch a Dash-9 on the point on this morning.

Not much of a mystery where this shot was taken! In the late 1990s, after the UP/SP merger, UP assigned unique IDs to every control point on the former Rio Grande (and all of Espee). While most of the Grande trackage got an "RG" prefix (for Rio Grande), the tracks between Denver and Range got the "DS" prefix (for Denver & Salt Lake). The reason being because Tennessee Pass got the "RG" prefix, and milepost number on Tennessee Pass and the Moffat are duplicated. So the prefix was changed to avoid confusion.

East meets west at the west switch of Rocky. An eastbound BNSF Provo-Denver (which is currently moving compass north) meets a westbound UP PBurg Local (which is currently moving compass south). After the meet, the UP train will pull up and around Big Ten and run on the rail near the top of the frame, up at Eisele.

You just have to love the track configuration at Blue Mountain and Coal Creek. The trains weave back and forth at the base of the canyon, while also making significant changes in elevation. Here, the crew of this eastbound can quite easily look out the window and check out their rear DPU as it descends from Tunnel One.

The lighting was just perfect for this eastbound BNSF manifest as it rolls through the S-Curves at Blue Mountain. The train me an (on time) Zephyr at Crescent, and will also meet a westbound UP manifest at Rocky. The UP manifest is already there, holding the siding.

Got oil? I'm not sure what it is about a unit tank train, but I think a long lens shot like this just looks awesome. Perhaps it's due to the shape of tank cars. So unique compared to just about any other piece of rolling stock.

The ever-expanding Denver skyline is visible to the right as a loaded BNSF oil train slowly rolls east toward the west switch at Leyden. The train will briefly stop at the west switch to wait for maintenance to clear. And by briefly, we are talking less than 30 seconds! I had hoped to move to the Simms Street grade crossing for another shot, but the 30 second stop didn't give me enough time to get there.
