Ahh, how times have changed! There was a time not long ago when you could count on seeing GE units putting on a great show, kicking up a ton of thick black smoke. Well, here we see a coal load doing just that. But it is the SD70ACe that is spitting out the black stuff!

A pair of C44-9Ws lead up a nine-hour-late California Zephyr about 30 miles northeast of Denver along I-76. The train is running on clear signals on the approach to Tonville.

BNSF's Denver, CO to Edgemont, SD manifest is pulling into siding at Tonville. Here, the train will wait for about 45 minutes for a very late westbound California Zephyr.

A clear signal at the east switch of Bijou indicates that a westbound train is approaching. That train is the Chicago to Denver Z-Train. However, despite the clear signal, the train would not arrive until well after the sunset.

Light is very quickly fading the western sky as BNSF's Denver, CO to Edgemont, SD manifest is switching cars here at Brush. After switching, the train will continue east to Sterling, CO where it will receive a crew change. Nice to see a Warbonnet on the point!

Here is a shot that is only possible once or twice a year, if that often. This is the eastbound California Zephyr heading into Fort Morgan right around noon. Typically, the Zephyr hits this stretch of track between 9 and 10 o'clock at night, so catching it in daylight is very rare.

Running two hours late, an extremely dirty AMTK 95 leads the westbound California Zephyr into Denver. On this day, the Zephyr is running with only seven Superliners instead of eight, as demand is often down some in the winter months.

This particular day ended us as well as it started! The weather was great all day long, and there are just a few clouds in the afternoon sky as this coal load heads into the setting sun. The engineer appears to be a railfan. If you look closely, you'll note a Trains magazine in the front windshield! We might have a closet railfan....

Just east of Ft Morgan, an eastbound coal empty approaches the underpass at County Road 12. The train is fairly typical in length on the Brush Sub, running with four units and 120 cars.

A telephoto look at a meet between a coal load and empty at the siding of Tonville. The empty on the siding just got a clear signal to head east and is starting to pull again.

At Tonville, at eastbound coal empty takes the siding to meet a westbound coal load passing underneath me on the main. It was a well-timed meet and the empty only had to come to a stop briefly.

This is just about as brand new as you can get! This coal load consisted of unit aluminum hoppers built in April 2009. The hoppers boast a "Rapid Discharge" system. Appears that a single door that spans the base of the hopper opens, allow the coal to be quickly dropped out.
