BNSF's Denver, CO to Edgemont, SD manifest is approaching the diamond at Sand Creek with some really nice power on the point. BNSF's Brush Sub (the track the train is on) and UP's Greeley Sub) track in the foreground) intersect here. On days when the California Zephyr detours through Wyoming, it arrives in Denver in mornings on the Brush Sub heading left (in this shot) and the departs Denver on the Greeley Sub heading right.

A freshly painted BNSF SD40-2 (in the New Image Scheme) sits at the Suncor Refinery in Commerce City. After a few mainline trains get through, the crew will request to come out on the main and pickup some tank cars to take back to town.

Now here is a fantastic sight (despite the rather horrible backlit conditions)! During the economic downturn, there was a period of about a year when BNSF shut down and stored all of its SD60M's. With a bit of a pickup in business, the SD60M's have been brought back out. Case-in-point is this Denver, CO to Edgemont, SD manifest that has three of them (along with an SD70MAC). The train here is slowing as they have a red at the Riverside hold signal.

A westbound coal load approaches the east end of BNSF's 31st Street Yard in Denver. While some coal trains stop in the yard for a crew change, this coal load is going to be taken south to the Lodo Siding (near Kalamath Street) to be tied down.

The last shot of the day and, as it turns out, probably my favorite too! After meeting two eastbound coal empties at Hillrose, this unit grain train is heading west toward Brush and then Denver. Ahh, the end of Daylight Savings Time, when the sun is gone by 5:00pm!

In the last rays of the setting sun, an eastbound coal empty turns off the main track and into the siding at Hillrose. A westbound grain train sits on the main track. When the coal train clears, the grain train will continue.

This shot caught my eye as I was watching this westbound coal empty heading into the siding at Hillrose. With the change off Daylight Savings Time the night before, the sun does set much earlier, but you can get some fantastic light right before sunset!

There is an explosion of light from behind the clouds along the western horizon as the sun gets closer to setting. In the foreground, a coal empty proceeds east out of the siding at Hillrose.

Less than twenty minutes before sunset, the sun has come out from behind the clouds and an eastbound coal empty throttles up to leave the siding of North Hillrose to continue on to Sterling. The grain train it just met sits on the main, a pair of C44-9Ws are DPU'd on the end.

At the east switch of Hillrose, a westbound unit grain train proceeds on a yellow signal. The "earth worm" (as these unit grain trains are often referred to) is will stop on the main at Hillrose to meet two eastbounds. One eastbound is a coal empty on the siding and the second is an empty just south of the siding, holding the main.

Fall colors are pretty well in full swing down at the lower altitudes on the plains. The Edgemont to Denver manifest is just east of Barr running on clear signals headed back toward town.

There is a nice lake, which is somewhat difficult to shoot, at the west switch of Tonville on the Brush sub. An Edgemont to Denver manifest heads for the signal alongside the lake.
