Quite a few local railfans received the news regarding this westbound UP passenger train. As expected, many of them (myself included) were gathered at Blue Mountain Drive for a couple of shots of the afternoon move.

This UP passenger train is supposedly deadheading westbound to Grand Junction this afternoon. It came south on the Greeley Sub yesterday morning, and stayed overnight at North Yard last night. There is speculation that the train might have something to do with the UP/NS merger, announced on July 29th. But that is entirely speculation.

UP 6045 is still slowly moving along, thanks to another (of many) slow orders that are encompassing the Moffat this summer. The train is winding through the S-Curves just east of the grade crossing at Blue Mountain Drive.

Summer afternoons in Colorado are very frequently overcast with thunderstorms moving through the area. Fortunately, mother nature had other plans this afternoon, as the skies are nearly completely clear, offering perfect light for this westbound UP passenger train. The train is headed for Grand Junction today.

After making track speed from Denver to Rocky, this UP passenger train is now slowing at Rocky in preparation for a 10 MPH slow order ahead from Little Ten Curve up to the east switch of Eisele (give or take).

A C44ACM and an SD70M lead a westbound passenger deadhead by the east switch of Rocky. UP 6045 is sporting UP's newest paint scheme. UP 4533 has the good old flag scheme and is fantastic condition. Say what you will Union Pacific, they really know how to make a passenger train look great.

A power car and nine of UP's passenger cars heads west through Barbara's Gulch. The train is missing several of UP's passenger cars. Not sure why this train is headed west. It is supposedly a deadhead move, and it is headed to Grand Junction this afternoon.

The morning Zephyr meets an eastbound oil train at Rocky. DS-378 has already set up a clear (green) signal at the east end of Rocky, and the train is getting ready to continue to Denver. Meanwhile, the Zephyr passes by the seldom-used Rocky Spur (or Rocky Flats Industrial Lead).

The morning Zephyr is running right on time today, as it rolls west through Barbara's Gulch. An eastbound oil train awaits the Zephyr in the siding at Rocky. Fortunately, DS-378 set up a good meet, and the oil train is already clear of the west switch, so the Zephyr will not be delayed.

An SD70ACe leads an eastbound loaded oil train in the siding at Rocky. DS-378 has set up a great meet with the westbound Zephyr, which is just to the east, entering Barbara's Gulch right now. After the meet, the oil train will continue east to Denver.

The Rocky Mountaineer's Rockies to the Red Rocks is only making one trip west per week between Denver and Moab throughout the month of August. In the high heat of the summer, demand for the Mountaineer is decreased, so the train does not run Sunday through Tuesday. It only runs Wednesday through Friday. This morning, the Mountaineer has its GP40-3s and is making track speed.
