About ten years ago, BNSF moved both the north and south switches of Broomfield. Both are now further north than they previously were, eliminating two grade crossing between switches, including the very busy Nickel Street grade crossing. Now, the siding is basically the same length, but there are no grade crossing blocked when a train is stopped here. This northbound has just received a new warrant, and is pulling across the Brainard grade crossing, which was also relocated at the same time to ensure no grade crossing where between switches on the siding.

At the North Siding Switch (NSS) of Broomfield, the conductor on BNSF's Denver-Laurel throws the switch from the main to the siding. The train has received a warrant, and is ready to proceed north.

For decades, pedestrians and cyclists wanting to cross the tracks here at Broomfield, they would do so via a dirt path that had been created just from the traffic of people walking across the tracks and up or down the hill on the other side. In an effort to make this safer and more convenient, the City of Broomfield built this pedestrian overpass in 2020.

At the siding of Broomfield, the Denver-Laurel takes the siding, meeting its counterpart, the Laurel-Denver, which was holding the main. The Front Range Sub is still operated using track warrants, meaning crew have to manually throw all switches at sidings. To save time, crews are not required to realign switches for the main line. So, when a meet happen, the train will take the siding or hold the main depending on how the switch is aligned, regardless of how close or far away the train being met is to the siding.

Rocking it like it is 2000! BNSF's Denver-Laurel has a trio of C44-9Ws, all still wearing Heritage 2 paint. The train is passing by Lower Church Lake (which hasn't actually been a lake in a few years; it is all dried up) and approaching the US-36 underpass. It was right at this location when, in 1985, northbound and southbound Burlington Northern trains collided head on, melting the steel of the bridge.

After UP's MNYGR departed North Yard for the Greeley Sub, it was finally BNSF's Denver-Laurel's turn to head north on the Front Range Sub. I was happy this worked out as it has been quite a while since I've done any chasing on the Front Range Sub. The sub tends to be fairly dead most of the time. It carries way less traffic than the Moffat does. Here, the 8,000+ foot long manifest is just a few miles south of the south switch of Broomfield in Westminster.

This special high/wide movement is utilizing a 20-axle "schnabel car" to transport what I presume is some sort of generator. Basing that on the "GE Vernova" on the side of the tarp protecting the heavy load.

This northbound special is currently stopped on the south side of Longmont. A local had a warrant on the track ahead, but just cleared it up. That allowed the special here to get a new warrant to proceed from the current location up to Loveland, where the train will be turned over to the Great Western Railway.

Some (fairly common) afternoon thunderstorms have spilled off the Colorado Rockies south of Denver and have now moved east onto the plains. As you can see, a fair amount of rain is falling with the storms, as a northbound Denver, CO to Laurel, MT manifest pulls north on the (un-signaled) Front Range Sub.

I managed to "dumb luck" into coming across the Denver-Laurel manifest as it was departing Denver. Here, the train passes by RTD's final B-Line commuter rail station. This is the line that, ostensibly, is supposed to eventually reach Boulder. But, after money ran out, the line never made it beyond Westminster.

A GP39-3 and a GP39-2, both of Santa Fe heritage, are working at Rennicks this morning. Rennicks is BNSF's intermodal facility in Denver. yard job has come to a stop, and after a switch being thrown at the back of the long string of cars, the job will make a reverse move back into Rennicks.

A BNSF yard job, hauling a long string of JB Hunt double stacks, pulls across UP's Belt Line on the Front Range Sub. After crossing through the CTC limits across the diamond, the head end of the yard job is now in Restricted Limits. No track warrant needed for this switching.

The second unit on this northbound BNSF manifest is an ET44C4. It is compliant with the EPA Tier-4 emissions standards. This accounts for the large radiator blister at the back of the long hood. BNSF has purchased 350 of these units, making them the railroad that has likely purchased the most Tier-4 locomotives.
