The train has just crossed Kipling Street (back at the red intermediate) and is approaching 72nd Avenue. Note the sign that says "X" and "QZ". The "X" indicates to the crew that a grade crossing is approaching. The "QZ" indicates that the crossing is a "Quiet Zone", and that the horn should not be used (unless somebody is actually on the tracks). In the next four to eight years, this scene is supposed to be quite different as RTD Light Rail (or Commuter Rail) should be visible at this location. About two weeks earlier, a tanker truck loaded with Ethanol attempted to beat this SD40-2 to a grade crossing. The result was a huge fireball and a lot of heat! Amazingly, nobody was hurt in the incident. The SD40-2 was doing local switching. It had no cars at the time and was running long hood forward, which is no doubt what saved the crew. An interesting note about UP 5701. That was the number ex-Rio Grande GP60 #3155 was originally slated to get in UP's roster. The decline in the economy has resulted in thousands of older units being shut down and stored. Consequently, it has become common to find some of the newest power working the "lowly" Beer Run. An interesting note...the station sign of "Broomfield" has been removed and smaller signs have been added at either end of the siding that say "NSS Broomfield" and "SSS Broomfield" for "North Siding Switch" and "South Siding Switch", respectively.
