It is the last day of Winter for 2009-2010 and the grass is slowly starting to turn green again. A southbound manifest passes through a field just north of Fort Lupton, CO

Union Pacific has been slowly replacing the signals along the Greeley Sub. The signal at south Platteville has yet to be replaced. While the signal hasn't been replaced, the codeline has. Not the ATCS radio tower seemingly coming up out of the middle of the lead unit.

US-85 parallels the Greeley Sub for most of the trip from Hazeltine to Nunn. Here, cars heading north on the highway are likely indifferent to the MNPNY-20, which is approaching the south switch of Platteville.

The daily North Platte to North Yard manifest enters a super elevated curve just south of Gilcrest on its way toward Denver. The train is being led by a pair of GE AC's, the first of which was an AC6000CW until it was converted from 6,000 HP to 4,400 HP.

Highball Sand Creek Junction! This UP manifest has a clear signal on the outbound track just north of 36th Street. The Denver skyline is just barely visible through the low clouds in the distance.

A rather lengthy Denver to Green River (WY) manifest starts to pull out of UP's 36th Street Yard, ready for its journey north on the Greeley Sub. The train is just approaching York Street over the left shoulder of the photographer.

On the last few miles of its "reroute" journey, the eastbound California Zephyr comes down the outbound track off the Greeley Sub at York Street. The train has spent half the summer months running from Denver to Salt Lake (and vice versa) via Wyoming due to maintenance on the Moffat.

This is a shot that I've been wanting to get now for a couple of year and I was really happy that if worked out this year. The Frontier Days Special approaches Sand Creek where the UP Greeley Sub crosses over the BNSF Brush Sub.

The sun is getting closer and closer to the western horizon as the steam train makes its way closer to Denver. The train passes beneath E-470 in the distance, just south of Brighton.

I haven't done a whole lot with Frontier Days the last couple of years. And I was reminded of exactly why this year. Traveling on US-85 can be extremely aggravating at times. Some people will pace UP 844 and block traffic behind them. On this evening, I was one of the those being blocked. This pacing shot (which is by no means one of my best) was the closest to the head end of the train I could get from La Salle all the way down to Brighton!

This is, to date, the best shot of UP 6936 that I have. Would have been really cool to see these in mainline freight service! I actually really think the corn fields in the background add something to the shot, don't you!?

My favorite shot of the day for the Cheyenne Frontier Days special. The lighting was really good and UP 844 is putting off enough smoke to make it look nice and classy! The train is just south of downtown La Salle.

A look down on the longest diesel locomotive ever constructed! UP 6936 is a DDA40X built in January 1971 and is just shy of 100ft in length. The unit was used as a backup (and for dynamic braking) on the Cheyenne Frontier Days train.

After a very brief stop in Greeley, UP 844 has the Cheyenne Frontier Days special rolling south again. After a long day in Cheyenne, passengers are enjoying the ride back to Denver.
