The Valmont coal load makes a reverse move away from the camera to spot a string of cars at the power plant, noted to the left in this shot. Despite the somewhat rural look, this is actually in the middle of Boulder!

Time for a break! The Valmont coal train is going to be dropping off its cars at the power plant and siding in Boulder. As a result, the Tacoma-Denver freight will be stopped at 63rd Street for about two hours to wait for the work to be completed.

This double stack (with a few auto racks thrown on the front) train left Tacoma, WA a week before this picture was taken. New Years Eve and New Years Day slowed all trains down a bit! The QTACDEN always runs with auto racks up front and double stack in the back. Of course a big, large cloud set over the area about 20 seconds before I snapped this shot!

Construction is continuing like there is no tomorrow along the tracks just north (geographically west) of the siding of Broomfield. The southbound HLAUDEN (Laurel, MT to Denver, CO) has a colorful consist! It'll enter the siding at Broomfield to meet a loaded Valmont train.

The scotchlite on the Dash-9s shows up really well in the last few minutes of the setting sun! BNSF has a lot of paint schemes these days, and it's almost nice to see a set of three units wearing one scheme!

With a track warrant all the way from south siding switch of Broomfield to MP 72 in Fort Collins, the Denver-Laurel freight heads west into the setting sun at Burns Junction. The caboose (now referred to as a "shoving platform") sits on the Lafayette Industrial Lead.

Any guesses where this shot was taken!? The Longmont Switch, short one unit, has arrived at North Yard in Fort Collins with a string of cars. These cars will be dropped off here for interchange with the Great Western. Typically, the Longmont Switch would have two units, but the second unit (a GP60M) was not cooperating and was left in Longmont.

A freshly painted rebuild GP40 (now a GP40-2R) is the sole power on the Longmont Switch. This unit was built many years ago as CB&Q 177! And a word of warning to the pickup...watch you don't swerve off the road! BNSF's Front Range Sub runs right up the middle of Mason Street in downtown Fort Collins.

Mason Street in Fort Collins is true street running. It can be difficult to shoot northbounds though and they are moving with the sun almost always behind them! Such is the case here as the Longmont Switch (running with a single rebuilt GP40) proceeds cautiously near the north end of Mason Street. Cars continue to drive along either side of the train.

A BNSF northbound heads north on the main track while a Great Western switcher waits on a side track at the Budweiser Brewery. After the BNSF train clear, the GWR switcher will come out and head back for North Yard.
