A small hole in the trees from Easley Road (north of the museum) revealed a very decent shot of DRGW 5401 (patched as UP 9871) as crews work to bring it in through the gates. The Tunnel Motor is reaching the north end of the (temporary) panel track, and the Hulcher Service cranes are moving in to position to lift the unit up once more in order to spot it on the museum track.

DRGW 5401 is almost through the gates of the Colorado Railroad Museum. Took the opportunity to grab a shot of a "Rough Road" sign that the City of Golden put up 5 minutes before I took this picture. Moving a near 200-ton engine isn't exactly kind to an asphalt road. Drivers along 44th Avenue will experience some bumps for a couple of days.

Such a cool view looking right down 44th Avenue at the side of a Rio Grande SD40T-2. The color and Grande Gold and the color of the center stripes on 44th Avenue is a mighty close match!

Hulcher Service cranes lift the back of DRGW 5401 up high enough to ensure that the trucks will clear the temporary panel track laid across 44th Avenue. Once over the panel track, the cranes will lower back of the Tunnel Motor down to the rails.

With the panel track secure and a tractor hooked up to the front of DRGW 5401, the nearly 200-ton diesel-electric engine is slowly rolled north across 44th Avenue. At this point, two Hulcher Service cranes are still support the back end of the unit off the ground. Once the back end is over the panel track, they will lower it to the rails.

Now how is that for a site! DRGW 5401 (patched as UP 9871) sits on temporary panel track that is just laying across 44th Avenue leading in to the Colorado Railroad Museum. Absolutely thrilled that this Tunnel Motor will be preserved.

A wider angle shot looking down 44th Avenue east from Easley Way. In addition to crews from the museum and moving crews, several local news crews are on the scene. Xcel Energy is also present to ensure no power lines are in the way of the cranes during the massive move.

With the panel track laid across 44th Avenue and in to the Colorado Railroad Museum, the Hulcher Service cranes move the front of DRGW 5401 over the panel track and gently lower it on to the rails.

Two tractors work together to carry a stretch of panel track down 44th Avenue, making the turn in to the Colorado Railroad Museum. These four sections of panel track will be laid across the road and across the existing track at the entrance of the museum (which is perpendicular to this track) in order to roll DRGW 5401 on to the property. The front coupler of the Tunnel Motor is just barely visible at the right of the frame.

DRGW 5401 (patched as UP 9871) is slowly being moved off 44th Avenue to the south, in to a dirt parking lot. Once this move is complete, crews will retrieve the four sections of panel track that were used earlier to cross the Farmers Canal. The panel track will be laid across 44th Avenue and in to the Colorado Railroad Museum property.

After lowering the back end of DRGW 5401 in order to re-position themselves, the Hulcher Service cranes pump out some exhaust as they work to raise the back of the Tunnel Motor up and off the ground once again.

And even more of conductor's side of DRGW 5401 (patched as UP 9871) as the cranes slowly roll off the asphalt and in to the dirt parking lot. Unfortunately, the process tore up the road a little bit and Golden crew will come out within the next few days to see what repairs will be needed.

More of the conductor's side of DRGW 5401 starts as the Hulcher Services crane maneuver toward the dirt parking lot in order to get a straight shot in through the museum front gate.

In order to get DRGW 5401 in to the Colorado Railroad Museum, crews had to make a 90° turn off 44th Avenue. Here, crews are starting to make the turn in to a dirt parking lot on the south side of the road.

As Hulcher Services works to transport DRGW 5401 (patched as UP 9871) west on 44th Avenue, it was not only incredible seeing it suspended off the ground, but it was amazing see it lightly rock back and forth as the cranes slowly rolled down the road. A few shrubs got a bit of a beating on the right side of the road!
