All 29 SD70ACes, as well as the rest of MRLs power, transferred over to BNSF ownership at the start of 2024 after BNSF bought out the contract with MRL. The contract was formed in 1987 and was originally signed for 60 years, set to expire in 2047. With increasing traffic on BNSF's norther Transcon, BNSF wanted to reclaim possession of the MRL. Both railroads came to agreement on the terms, and the STB approved the early contract termination in March 2023. On January 1, 2024, the MRL ceases to exist, with all assets absorbed by BNSF. It is not entirely clear why the train is currently stopped. In the distance, you can see the headlight of an approaching westbound coal load that will overtake the manifest. With very few exceptions, BNSF coal trains run in a 2x2 configuration, and this train falls right in to that standard category. The fuselages are assembled in Kansas, and are hauled by rail to the Boeing plant in Seattle. There, assembly will be completed, with the wings and tail being added. A sleeper is being carried above the rails (what is left of them, in places), taking it back to the rest of the train. The transition sleeper, whose front truck derailed, will be taken next. The train struck a semi at a grade crossing out of the frame to the left. The train was at track speed, about 79 MPH, when the semi was struck. The engineers in the lead unit were reported injured and taken to a hospital. There were no reports of any serious injuries amongst the crew.
