After meeting a westbound at the siding of Crest, this eastbound on the move again between Crest and Wiggins. The siding of Crest itself is somewhat isolated and not easily accessible. Whereas the other sidings on the Brush Sub are visible from I-76. While most of this Q-Train consists of double stack containers, if you look toward the end, you'll notice a handful of auto racks and a few general manifest cars.

At first glance, you might guess this is a BNSF Z-Train. Particularly with the appearance of JB Hunt containers. However, this is actually a "Q" train that originated in Alliance, TX and is headed for Portland, OR, by way of Denver. The train is moving at track speed as it approaches a clear (green) signal at the east switch of Tonville.

It is exceptionally rare to be able to catch the eastbound Zephyr crossing through the diamond at Sand Creek in this type of lighting. Normally, the Zephyr would come through here around 7:45pm (when on time). However, it is 11:30am and the Zephyr is over 16 hours late due to flooding and an out of service track in Nevada the previous day. Here, the train is crossing over Sand Creek in the highly industrial town of Commerce City.

A three hour late westbound Zephyr slowly rolls by the site of a (relatively) minor derailment at the Suncor oil refinery. A dozen or so empty tank cars went down the wrong track and derailed. Fortunately, it sounds as though there were no injuries. The derailment was quite a little ways away from the main, so the Zephyr had no problem getting through the site.

While double stack intermodal trains are a "dime a dozen" on lines like the Transcon and the Overland, they are far less common in the Denver-Metro area. Indeed, they are probably one of the least photographed types of trains I have. However, BNSF does run a Z-Train between Denver and Chicago (and back) six days a week. The eastbound version typically departs Denver shortly after sunrise in the summer months. Here, an ES44C4 and a pair of C44-9Ws lead the hot shot east by the glass reflection of Barr Lake.

After meeting the morning westbound Zephyr at the east end of the 31st Street Yard, the hottest train in or out of Denver, BNSF's ZDENCHI, is rolling by the Suncor Oil Refinery toward the diamond at Sand Creek. BNSF's Brush Sub crosses over UP's Greeley Sub at the diamond (the track in the foreground) which takes UP from Denver to Cheyenne. A trio of elephant-style GEs lead the high priority east.

After making a crew change in Lincoln, NE, the westbound Zephyr makes four station stops before reaching Denver. The final of the four stops is the small town of Fort Morgan, CO, located about 80 miles east of Denver. The town has a population of roughly 11,500 people, and the station stop is generally completed in two minutes or less. Here, in the early morning sun, the 90 minute late Zephyr tries to expedite the stop.
